My puppy poops after eating, has diarrhea. Is he sick? What food?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 13 days old | 3 lbs

I got my puppy 5 days back. He is passing stools immediately after eating and the stool is liquid to semi solid 7-8 times a day. Is he sick and what should I ideally feed him?

Your puppy is still very young. Usually mommy would still clean him up. It is normal for small puppies to pass stool right after eating. It is also normal to pass stool 7-8 times a day. This will get less as your puppy gets older. He should be fed canned puppy food (specifically for puppies!) for large breed puppies. You can slowly transition him from the wet puppy food to dry puppy food when the puppy is about 8 weeks old. You should feed your puppy 3-4 times daily.

It's good to feed a puppy this age 3-4 times a day. Make sure you feed per the instructions on the bag/can. The daily recommended amount should be divided evenly throughout the day.

It is normal for them to poop after eating and is not concerning unless she has blood in her stool or has diarrhea.

It is not uncommon for small puppies to urinate and defecate very frequently. Unless the defecation appears loose, discolored, or is filled with undigested particles, I would not assume there is a health issue currently brewing. Continue to feed your puppy a normal diet and take him out to use the bathroom whenever he needs to.

It is normal for a puppy to poop multiple times a day, but at three months old, he only needs to be fed three times a day. I would feed him morning, noon, and evening, and he should be fed a puppy formulated dry food only.

Once a day is quitelittle for such a young pup and I would be concerned about possible constipation develping and recommend you increase fiber content in the diet. Home cooked diets must be strictly balanced for healthy growth and development and I recommend you contact a nutritionist for further advice. Frequent bowel movements are not necessarily abnormal. They should have a firm consistency, and not be like diarrhea. As long as the stool is solid and well formed, this is perfectly normal. Every dog has a slightly different metabolism. If you are feeding the recommended amount on the bag, that is a good place to start. Over the next month you will want to watch his weight. If he seems to be developing fat rolls over this neck and shoulders, you might want to cut back a little. If he is becoming thin and you can see his ribs or hips, then increase the amount. You may have to increase or decrease his food over time as he continues to grow.

My young puppy isn't pooping or eating much. Should I go to the ER?

That is very young for a puppy to be adopted out. Ideally, it should have been at least 8 weeks old before being adopted. If she isn't eating much, she won't be defecating much either. You can try warming the food or mixing in some plain baby food (no onion, no garlic) to stimulate her appetite. An exam for any new pet is always recommended to confirm good health or to diagnose and treat any preexisting conditions. Unless she is lethargic, not eating all, is vomiting or has diarrhea, then she can probably see your regular veterinarian today or tomorrow.

Submit a stool sample to your veterinarian to diagnose intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. Puppies frequently acquire roundworms from their mother or environment. The paper likely would not cause an issue unless it was a large quantity. Make sure he continues to eat and drink normally. A bland diet and/or a prescribed dewormer may firm up his stool. Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting or persistent diarrhea.

Why is my 5-week-old puppy vomiting and has diarrhea after new food?

It's possible the change in food could be causing digestive upset. The best way to start transitioning to solids is to make a slurry of their regular milk replacer that they've already been on combined with a little bit of the puppy food. This helps make it easier to digest without being too big of a change and may help settle their stomachs. Checking for any parasites with a fecal exam and deworming may also help, however if the vomiting or diarrhea continues, a vet checkup to rule out anything more serious is best.

Is it normal for a new puppy to have diarrhea after coming home?

Diarrhea is a common problem in puppies, and can range from a short duration mild episode to a severe of a serious underlying condition. There are a number of causes of diarrhea in very young dogs, the most common ones include: stress induced, change in diet, Ingestion of a foreign object, parasites and viral infections. If your puppy is having diarrhea, there's no reason to panic as long as the puppy still eating drinking and playful or the diarrhea is very severe. It’s always important to keep a close eye on a puppy with diarrhea, as puppies can get much sicker much faster. If the problem doesn't resolve within a few potty sessions, or the puppy start to show other systemic signs such as vomiting, lethargy, reduced appetite you should make an appointment with your veterinarian or local emergency clinic. Bear in mind young puppies can become dangerously dehydrated in 24 hours or less.
