My 5-week-old puppy has swollen eyelids after going outside. Why?

This is most suspicious of a demodex (a microscopic mite) infection. They tend to have irritation and hair loss around their eyes and other parts of the face. It can also affect other parts of the body. Demodex is actually normally found on dogs and does not usually cause a problem. It is not uncommon for puppies to react to it at this age though. However, they usually will clear the infection on their own and don't need treatment. This will normally go away within three weeks. If it lasts longer than that or gets worse (losing hair on other parts of the body), then it's best to get her diagnosed and treated by a veterinarian. For now, you can give a little relief and prevent infection by washing the area gently with baby shampoo. Use cool water and flush the area for at least 5 minutes once a day. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Cotton! When it comes to eye issues I recommend a Vet examine the pet. Cotton's eyes could be swollen from an allergic reaction to an insect/spider bite or from some allergen outside or from an infection. The mainstay of treatment for an allergic reaction are steroids and antihistamines. An infection is treated with antibiotics and steroids. Your Vet will want to be sure the eye balls themselves are ok and don't have a scratch on them (corneal ulcer). I hope this helps and I wish Cotton a speedy recovery!

Freckles could have a couple things going on. First she could have something simple called blepharitis which is inflammation of the eyelids. She could have a scratch on her eyes but she could also have something called Puppy Strangles. This is also known as juvenile cellulitis. This causes inflammation around the eyelids. The cause of this is unknown but can occur anywhere from 3 weeks to 4 months of age. Treatment for this is a long course of steroids, sometimes topical medications and oral antibiotics. Hi, I would recommend to have it checked over to make sure there is nothing behind the eye lid, such as thorn, and no damage to eye cornea such as a scratch for example. Normally conjunctivitis is bilateral whilst here it looks like an unilateral problem so could it be she has caused a scracth to the eyelid or the eye surface. Hope this makes sense and that Kiera is back to her normal self soon.

Oscar needs to be examined by the veterinarian today. That swelling most likely indicates an allergic reaction, a deep skin infection or cellulitis. All of these conditions require treatment. Make sure to protect his eyes from any rubbing by having him wear an Elizabethan collar at all times. Rubbing the eye could make things worse. Have him seen quickly. Best of luck.

It sounds as your puppy is suffering from an eye infection, it is relatively common in dogs. you will need to take him to the vet the first chance you get, the vet will check the eyes, if it is indeed a simple eye infection your vet will prescribe an antibiotic eye drops that will probably solve the problem in no time.

It's a little difficult to tell exactly what might be red and swollen in your picture. It looks like the redness and swelling may be around the eye as opposed to actual eye itself. If this is the case, an allergic reaction or eyelid infection would be two of the more common causes. If it is the white of his eye that looks swollen conjunctivitis, a corneal abrasion, or inflammation in the eye would all be possibilities. If the swelling worsens or if you notice swelling around the other eye or the muzzle I'd recommend seeing a veterinarian as soon as you can since this would increase the concern for an allergic reaction which should be treated promptly. Otherwise I think you're okay to wait to see your regular veterinarian if the swelling is still present in the morning, unless he seems painful or begins squinting.
