My new puppy has swollen eyes, green discharge, and scabs. What is it?

This is most suspicious of a demodex (a microscopic mite) infection. They tend to have irritation and hair loss around their eyes and other parts of the face. It can also affect other parts of the body. Demodex is actually normally found on dogs and does not usually cause a problem. It is not uncommon for puppies to react to it at this age though. However, they usually will clear the infection on their own and don't need treatment. This will normally go away within three weeks. If it lasts longer than that or gets worse (losing hair on other parts of the body), then it's best to get her diagnosed and treated by a veterinarian. For now, you can give a little relief and prevent infection by washing the area gently with baby shampoo. Use cool water and flush the area for at least 5 minutes once a day. I hope that helps and Lola starts to get better soon.

I would keep a close eye on it, but she doesn't need to be rushed to an emergency clinic unless she's lethargic, refusing to eat, or the swelling is getting noticeably worse. This could be something as mild as a bug bite or previously unnoticed injury (particularly if she happens to live with a cat, but she could have scrapped herself on something a few days ago without it being obvious). It could also be the start of something more serious called Puppy Strangles. Because of the possibility of Puppy Strangles, I would recommend a check up at the vet tomorrow (or an emergency clinic tonight if you notice the changes mentioned above). Hello. This could be conjunctivitis, but there are several other conditions that can cause this kind or irritation, including demodex mites. You do want to find out what this is because I am sure Kirby is uncomfortable. And, if he rubs his eyes the wrong way, he could wind up scratching his cornea making things worse. This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. I'm so sorry to hear that Benji is not feeling well. Since the areas affected are only on the head and neck, I would be worried that you are dealing with something that we call puppy strangles. It could be caused by an infection or allergic reaction so he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat the problem. He may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, and/or a corticosteroid and your vet can prescribe.

It is very hard to say what is going on as the eyelids are closed and very swollen. The skin scabs could be self-inflicted wounds from scratching. I suspect Zelda may have bad eye infection, corneal ulcer or allergic reaction to the eyes that got worse because she was scratching the eye. It could be a skin parasite called Demodex - it often shows up in puppies as sores around the eyes. Your vet may want to examine skin scrapes under microscope to check for Demodex tomorrow. For this evening you should clean the eyes with wet cotton buds and make sure Zelda is not trying to scratch the eyes.
