My dog has lumpy, swollen eyelids and hair loss. Is it serious?

It looks like an infection around the eyelid. This can happen if the eye has been excessively moist lately. The other common cause of this hair loss around the eye is a mite known as Demodex. This is normally seen in puppies. Sport looks like he's a senior, so it's less likely, but still possible. The cause of the swelling can usually be identified by a veterinarian. They can look for the mite and treat for infection. The vet will also be able to give medication that will take down the swelling, which is much needed now. For now, it's best if you can flush the area with saline. You can find this at the local pharmacy or supermarket in the eye care section. Flush for 15 seconds twice a day. This will give some relief and help to treat/prevent infection. I recommend taking Sport to the vet within the next few days to keep this from getting worse.

Thank you for submitting your question. I can concerned that Teddy had an autoimmune disease that is affecting his eyelids. This is when the body attacks its own skin cells. He could alao have a severe allergy. Even if the underlying cause is something different, a skin biopsy is warranted to give you a definitive diagnosis. It could be that Lovey is suffering from an allergic reaction causing these swollen bumps around his body. It could be an environmental allergy causing these bumps, but without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain. I am concerned he now has a swollen eye, as he could have injured his eye or have an eye infection. To answer your question, yes definitely take him into the vet today. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it is considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. It looks like he has got the eyelid caught in something given the sudden yelp, inflammstion and hair loss. Alternatively it may be a lump but if it has suddenly appeared this is less likely. I would advise having it checked by the vet to rule out anything serious given the proximity to his eye. He will benefit from an antinflammatory even if it is a simple wound as it looks sire and swollen.

Eye problems are always very concerning and Pup Pup will need to be examined by a veterinarian ASAP. Corneal ulcers and injuries can cause loss of vision, are painful and can be caused even by crusty eye lids scraping on the eye ball. The fact that the eye is swollen and the the lower lid is drooping does point to a more serious problem. Please take her to an emergency vet today.
