My dog's eyelid is swollen and itchy after a walk. What should I do?

It looks like Denzel's third eyelids are sticking out. For some reason, her eyes are irritated but I can't diagnose why without seeing her in person. Any eye problem should be checked out by a vet promptly as leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Please take her into a vet now.

Hello. It appears that the upper eyelid is inflamed. This is a condition called blepharitis. It could be an allergic reaction to something in the park. You can apply warm compresses to the area alternating with cool compresses to help relieve the swelling. (3-4 times a day). If it has not improved in the next 24-48 hours, I would have your vet examine her and determine if further treatment is needed.

Hello. This could be some type of allergic reaction. Apply a warm compress to the area twice a day for 10-15 minutes at a time. You will need to keep the water quite warm, but not uncomfortable. It is really hard to say for sure. I would recommend taking her to a vet for a good exam. Since it is her eyes that are affected it is important to make sure she does not need medications/eye drops to resolve the issue. If it is related to allergies you can try an over the counter anti histamine and possibly place a warm compress on the eyes 2 times a day to help remove debris and decrease inflammation. That looks like Cherry eye but a swollen 3rd eye lid could also look like this. Cherry eye is not generally uncomfortable/itchy so I have some concerns that something else is happening (maybe a foreign object trapped underneath the eye lid). Yes, continue to have her wear the cone and I recommend to have her examined today to determine the exact cause and treatment. If it is cherry eye, surgery should be done quickly. I hope this helps.

Poor Alpha! The most common reasons for swollen eyes are bee strings/bug bites or an allergic reaction (of which you generally never know the cause). Trauma or something stuck in the eye could also cause swelling in the area. Carefully check the area for any stingers or marks. You can apply a cold (not cold) compress to the area. Unfortunately, unless you find a stinger, you won't know the cause. You must also protect the area from rubbing with an elizabethan collar since rubbing could make it worse. I recommend to play it safe and have Alpha examined by the veterinarian today. The doctor will check the eye as well as look for clues as to the cause. If an allergic reaction is suspected, he will likely receive an injectable antihistamine and possible a steroid or anti-inflammatory. Just like with humans, some pets may experience an anaphylactic reaction. Monitor your dog for signs of an allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing, general weakness or a progression of swelling. If you see any of those signs this could indicate a serious anaphylactic reaction and you need to take him into the vet immediately. Also, if the swelling doesn't go down after 24 hours, take him into your vet. Best of luck.

It could be self-inflicted trauma from excessive scratching, or it may be a blunt injury from walking into something or being scratched by another animal. As there is a risk of damage to the cornea, I would suggest you to take Cooper to your local vets today to fully examine the eye and to get treatment for him.
