My puppy woke up with one eye swollen shut. What should I do?

Hello I have a puppy he went to sleep and just woke up with one eye swollen shut

It sounds as your puppy is suffering from an eye infection, it is relatively common in dogs. you will need to take him to the vet the first chance you get, the vet will check the eyes, if it is indeed a simple eye infection your vet will prescribe an antibiotic eye drops that will probably solve the problem in no time.

It would be best to have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment at this point as this may be something concerning such as a corneal injury if it is in the eyeball per se for example or due to an infection of the skin around it though it is not possible to know this based on a picture. I recommend you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Best of luck!

This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, uveitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. I highly recommend that you have Mickey evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Further therapy would be based on the findings. Good luck and best wishes!

My 7-day-old puppy has a swollen eye. What's the best action?

You need to get the puppy to a vet for an exam. There is no way for me to tell you what is wrong with the eye just by looking at a photo. Eyes are very delicate organs and if not treated promptly when there is an injury or a disease process going on then eye may be damaged to the point where the puppy could lose permanent vision. This looks like a swelling of Poppy's conjunctiva as opposed to the eye itself. It could be due to an allergic reaction or infection such as conjunctivitis. She will need eye drops and antinflammatories to settle this down so go to your vet as soon as you can. In the mean time pressing a cooled tea bag on the outside of the eye can provide some relief.

My dog's eyes are swollen, gunky, and hard to open. What should I do?

He can have a possible infection or conjunctivitis since it is affected both eyes. Since the discharge is getting worse and he does not want to open his eyes, it is best he sees a vet to determine if there is a scratch on the cornea or just an infection. There is topical antibiotics +/- a steroid to help clear them. The only thing you can do at home is rinse with sterile eye wash and try to apply a warm compress to help with the swelling.

Eye problems are always very concerning and Pup Pup will need to be examined by a veterinarian ASAP. Corneal ulcers and injuries can cause loss of vision, are painful and can be caused even by crusty eye lids scraping on the eye ball. The fact that the eye is swollen and the the lower lid is drooping does point to a more serious problem. Please take her to an emergency vet today.

What causes a red, swollen eye in an outdoor dog with no pain?

It's a little difficult to tell exactly what might be red and swollen in your picture. It looks like the redness and swelling may be around the eye as opposed to actual eye itself. If this is the case, an allergic reaction or eyelid infection would be two of the more common causes. If it is the white of his eye that looks swollen conjunctivitis, a corneal abrasion, or inflammation in the eye would all be possibilities. If the swelling worsens or if you notice swelling around the other eye or the muzzle I'd recommend seeing a veterinarian as soon as you can since this would increase the concern for an allergic reaction which should be treated promptly. Otherwise I think you're okay to wait to see your regular veterinarian if the swelling is still present in the morning, unless he seems painful or begins squinting.
