My puppy swallowed a large cow ear whole. Should I be worried?

Thank you for providing a picture of something like the ear Bandit ate, it's really helpful. Given that he swallowed it last night, I'd just monitor him for now. Do not give him any more olive oil, it will not help and because it's an oil and so fatty, it can cause him to have pancreatitis. It's good that he's acting normally, and he is a bigger dog, so this may pass without issue. Monitor him for vomiting, diarrhea, blood in the stool, lethargy, and a loss of appetite. If you see any of those signs, take him into a vet immediately. I hope this helps!

Hello, at his point, I would not be too concerned. Most times, the rawhide will continue to be digested. If Jack does not have much of an appetite tomorrow morning, just try feeding him a little later in the day. If, however, he starts vomiting, refuses all food, gulps water & vomits afterwards, or seems painful or bloated, then get him to your vet quickly. I have never liked giving any kind of rawhide to pets. Give him more appropriate items to chew such as Nylabones & Kong toys where you can hide food, & just about anything else that a dog can gnaw on without the possibility of breaking off & swallowing whole pieces. This also includes avoiding any kinds of real bones, pigs ears & hooves which can fracture teeth or splinter off leaving sharp edges. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

If he continues to show discomfort in the next few hours, I recommend you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Otherwise, he is likely going to be fine. Just be careful with smaller pieces that are swallowed whole as there is a chance of it getting stuck in the esophagus. You’d know if that happened because he’d be hard swallowing, drooling and regurgitating. I hope the helps and I wish Sirius the best!

However, it is important to watch closely for clinical signs consistent with an intestinal obstruction such as vomiting, abdominal pain and decreased appetite.
