My puppy swallowed a large bully stick whole. Should I be worried?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. I would monitor Ripley for now as there are no clinical symptoms to be concerned about. What I would recommend doing would be to feed bread slices with pure canned pumpkin to help booked up the feces around the object to help prevent it from causing any punctures in the intestinal tract potentially. If you begin to see any symptoms such as vomiting, lethargy, abdominal pain, inappetence or anything else out of the ordinary I would get Ripley seen by a veterinarian sooner rather than later and have abdominal x-rays taken to see if the stick has caused any issues. Hello, at his point, I would not be too concerned. Most times, the rawhide will continue to be digested. If Jack does not have much of an appetite tomorrow morning, just try feeding him a little later in the day. If, however, he starts vomiting, refuses all food, gulps water & vomits afterwards, or seems painful or bloated, then get him to your vet quickly. I have never liked giving any kind of rawhide to pets. Give him more appropriate items to chew such as Nylabones & Kong toys where you can hide food, & just about anything else that a dog can gnaw on without the possibility of breaking off & swallowing whole pieces. This also includes avoiding any kinds of real bones, pigs ears & hooves which can fracture teeth or splinter off leaving sharp edges. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

The stomach acid does a pretty great job at dissolving bully sticks. However, if he seems to have any trouble Swallowing, if he won’t eat, or has any vomiting and/or diarrhea then I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible.
