My dog swallowed a toy ear. He seems fine, but what should I do?

In most cases, it takes about 2-3 days for a swallowed foreign body (such as an ear plug) to pass all the way through and be excreted in the poop. Signs of an obstruction usually occur during this time if there is going to be a problem - usually if it's been more than 2-3 days, you're in the clear. So I would not be very worried about this as long as your pup is acting normal, although I would definitely try to make sure that he can't get to your ear plugs anymore as they are absolutely a risk for causing an obstruction. In rare cases, foreign bodies can stay in the stomach for weeks, months, or even years before eventually moving into the intestinal tract and causing problems - so there is still a slim chance that this could happen at some point, but there would be no way to tell this without an x-ray or endoscopy.

Oh that was naughty of Derek! There is a chance it could pass without problem, and I would just have him seen by a vet tomorrow. If he ate it within the past two hours, the vet may think it's safe to induce him to vomit it up, so you do have the option of calling a vet now about having him seen to get a shot to induce vomiting. That would prevent any chance of an obstruction. Likely, it will pass without problem, but just in case, I will give you the signs of an obstruction. They include vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, lethargy, and constipation. You can monitor him for those signs, and keep in mind that it can take up to 72 hours for it to pass. Hopefully, Derek will be just fine :-)

Hi, the main question is will it pass through the stomach into the intestine and then out with feaces ? Ideally, if possible he should be made sick with a simple injection at your local vet. That would put your mind at rest, if not you should just feed him and monitor what comes out the other end. Hope this helps !

This is a fairly small piece of cloth for a dog this size, so I wouldn't worry too much - it will probably pass through with no problems. You will need to monitor him for the next 2-3 days for any problems such as repeated episodes of vomiting, acting lethargic, or not wanting to eat - these can be signs of a blockage, so if you see them, you will need to take Archer to the vet right away. But as long as he is acting normal, I wouldn't worry at all.

What a naughty puppy. If the earring was small enough it has a good chance of coming out. I would feed Chewy 1/2 slice of bread twice a day, in between meals to help bind up the earring and then monitor the stools. Typically it can take 2-7 days for foreign objects to exit. Monitor him for signs of trouble which includes excessive vomiting, abdominal pain, lack of appetite and little to no stools. If you see these signs then it's best to take him in to your vet for abdominal x-rays to see if it is lodged somewhere and further treatment. But as o said it likely will pass. It depends on how big your puppy is, and how large the piece of earplug was that he ate - the biggest concern is that this could cause an obstruction in the intestines as it passes through. In a very small puppy like a Maltese or Toy Poodle, this would be a serious concern; in a larger puppy like a Labrador or Golden Retriever, it's less likely that this would happen. You will need to monitor your puppy for the next few days for any signs of an obstruction, which would include repeated episodes of vomiting, not wanting to eat, acting lethargic, or not having bowel movements. If you see any of these symptoms, take your pup to the vet for an exam right away, as he may need emergency surgery to remove the earplug. As long as he is acting normal (eating, drinking, playing, no vomiting), there should be no need to worry.
