Is my puppy's sticky eye discharge normal? How often should I clean?

Hello, sorry to hear about Pax. It could be that he is having normal eye secretions that are becoming stuck on his fur. As long as he is not itching at his eyes, having profuse persistent discharge, squinting, or having a red eye then I would continue to monitor him. You can use a damp cotton ball to wipe the fur around his eye and keep it clean. If the discharge worsens, or if he develops any sneezing or nasal discharge then you should have him evaluated by a veterinarian as this may indicate an upper respiratory infection. He is so cute! This can be a very normal thing is dogs like him. I wouldn’t be too worried unless he is ever favoring his eyes or if the discharge become thick and green or yellow. I would perhaps give it a few more days if the discharge is not green or yellow. Wipe the eyes clean several times daily. If the discharge does become green or yellow, if Oakley starts rubbing his eyes or squinting more than usual, if the whites of his eyes are looking red or if his eyes look cloudy then a trip to the vet is in order. If he develops any respiratory signs (nasal discharge, cough, sneeze, trouble breathing), then an exam is needed. Best of luck to you and Oakley!

I recommend cleaning this daily with a hot warm cloth to remove the discharge. Then when you have the area clean apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on the area below the eyes. That will help heal the skin and stop the discharge from sticking to the skin and fur. I would have Babygurl's eyes checked by your veterinarian. This looks like she has dry eyes, which is a decrease in normal tear production. With this condition the eye discharge is thick and sticky like this. There is medication for dry eyes which will increase the tear production. Dry eyes can be painful and she may irritate the corneas causing reduced vision without treatment, so please have her checked soon. Hello! In this image, Lucky does not seem to be having any trouble with his eyes. I know you just cleaned them, but they do not look overly irritated or inflamed. Ocular discharge can happen for a variety of reasons including infection, allergies, decreased tear productions, injury, etc. I would continue to monitor him and if you start to see any signs of rubbing his eyes, excessive discharge, or discomfort, call your veterinarian.

Some dogs can normally have a moderate amount of clear discharge from both eyes that can discolor the hair under the eyes a reddish-brown color. Keep Poppins' hair trimmed under her eyes and use a warm water washcloth to clean the discharge daily. However, if Poppins' eye discharge becomes yellow or green, causes squinting or redness to the eye, she will need to be examined by her vet.
