Why is my senior dog's eye discharging, scabbing, and itching?

It sounds like Juliet could have an eye infection. This is something that needs to be examined and treated by vet, as leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Give your vet a call to make an appointment for her to be seen to have her eye treated. Best of luck.

I would recommend having a veterinarian examine the eyes to check for any trauma and to see if she has adequate tear production. Dry eye can cause crusting and discomfort and could lead to serious corneal damage if not addressed early on. If there is an eye infection, the veterinarian can prescribe antibiotic eye drops to help treat this as well. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Hello. Thank you for using PetCoach. My guess is that Oscar could have keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) which is basically "dry eye". This is not necessarily serious, per se, but needs to have long-term medication to manage/control it. It is easy to test for this - a simple tear test that your vet can do in the office in just a few minutes. Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. This looks like a serious infection of the skin due to the matting of the eye discharge under the eye. Honestly, he will probably need oral antibiotics to clear this up so I really recommend you take him to a vet for an exam. Especially if the discharge from the eye has increased. In the meantime while waiting for an appointment you can use this eye gel in the eye AND on that raw spot, 3 - 4 times per day. You must be extremely careful with what type of products you use around the eye and many human eye medications are not appropriate to use in animals. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration and/or corneal ulcer. At least in these pictures, his cornea appears affected. I highly recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Based on the pictures and your description, I suspect that Maverick is dealing with a condition known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye). This is a condition that will not improve unless treated with eye medication such as Tacrolimus or Optimmune. This condition is localized destruction of the tear gland from the immune system and these eye medications suppress the immune system at the level of the eye to help try and stimulate tear production. I would recommend having the veterinarian recheck Maverick's eyes and perform what is called a Schirmer Tear Test to assess the tear production. If the eyes are below 21mm on the tear test, this is indicative of dry eye and needs to be treated appropriately. I hope this helps! Dry eye can result in the discharge in the picture you posted and can require more than just Artificial Tears to treat. (That would be more common than an allergy problem especially since only one eye is affected.)
