My puppy has soft poop with mucus but seems fine. Vet visit needed?

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Male | neutered | 3 months and 6 days old | 65 lbs

My puppy's BMs are normal in frequency, but the last three (over 24 hrs) have had a batter-like consistency with some mucus. Eating, drinking and other behaviour normal. Do I need to take him into the vet, or is this a monitor-and-see situation?

Diarrhea in a small puppy are concerning because of dehydration concerns as well as the risk of possible infectious diseases. The diarrhea could be due to parasites, bacterial or viral infections or even dieatery indiscretion. I would recommend you take your puppy to the vet as soon as possible for testing and treatment. If you notice any vomiting, you should seek emergency veterinary care for Henry.

I'm glad to hear that Henry is eating, drinking and otherwise acting normally, despite his soft stool. Common causes of diarrhea in young puppies include parasites, viruses (include parvovirus since he is not fully vaccinated), stomach upset from eating different foods, among others. Since everything else is normal, you can try a home remedy first. Start by withholding food for 6-8 hours, then offer a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for the next few days. If Henry's stool quality improves, you can begin mixing his normal puppy food with the chicken and rice for another 5-7 days. However, if Henry's diarrhea persists or worsens, if he becomes lethargic, stops eating, or starts vomiting, he will need to be examined by a vet immediately. I hope that he is feeling better soon!

I'd forgotten to mention that a rough rule of thumb is to feed 1 cup of a 50/50 chicken and rice mixture for every 10 pounds of body weight. Since Henry is a growing puppy, I recommend feeding him about 1 & 3/4 cup of this bland diet, but divide it into 3-4 smaller meals throughout the day.

My small puppy has diarrhea and is lethargic. When to see a vet?

It always concerns me when young puppies get lethargic. Puppies are more susceptible to the effects of dehydration and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) than adult dogs, so diarrhea is more serious for Wallace than it would be for an adult dog. If he's back to acting normally, eating, drinking, and doesn't have further diarrhea or vomiting, it's perfectly fine to continue monitoring him at home. However, if he remains lethargic, has more mucousy diarrhea, begins to vomit, or refuses to eat or drink normal amounts, then you should have him examined by his vet. Your vet will need to do a physical exam. Depending on their suspicions based on their exam findings, they may recommend some diagnostic testing or may opt to start him on some medications. Possible causes of this type of issue include stomach upset from a virus, intestinal parasites, among many other issues. If your vet finds that Wallace is dehydrated, they'll also be able to give him some fluids. I hope that he feels better soon!

My 13-week-old puppy has soft stool and pink mucous. What's wrong?

Hi there, I wouldn't be worried about one stool like this, but if it worsens or there is any vomiting, disinterest in food, or lethargy, that would warrant an emergency exam for a pup his age. Parvovirus is of serious concern if he is not fully vaccinated. If his stools remain soft but he is otherwise well, I'd recommend calling your regular veterinarian. They may recommend an exam or prescribe probiotics or a diet change if they have already seen Cliff. Puppies his age are generally dewormed every two weeks to eliminate all the life cycles of the most common parasites. I hope this is helpful. My new puppy has runny, bloody, mucousy poop. Should I worry?

This type of diarrhea could be due to G.I. parasites, which is not uncommon at all in puppies. This could also be related to the stress of a new home environment or diet change if it's occurred in the past week or so. There are over-the-counter deworming medication. However you may want to contact your veterinarian and see if they want you to bring in a fecal sample so they can tell you for sure if she has G.I. parasites. Generally speaking deworming medication it's fairly safe and would not be harmful if your puppy did not have parasites. However there are some G.I. parasites that require prescription strength deworming medication. But your veterinarian could do the fecal test and tell you if that is the case.

Thanks for submitting your question regarding Marmaduke. He needs to see his veterinarian again. Fecal testing will be performed. If it was done on his first visit, it may be repeated or additional tests recommended. Depending on his results, medication will likely be prescribed. A diet change to a prescription low fat diet may be beneficial as well. I typically do not recommend extended fasting on puppies as is common in adults with diarrhea. He is growing and needs to eat. My dog's poop is runny with mucus for 12 hours. Is this serious?

Hi there. Diarrhea can be caused by a multitude of things. Increased mucous makes me suspicious of parasites first. I would recommend taking your pup in to have a fecal. Based on the findings of this, you can choose how best to proceed after this easy step is ruled out. It may also be that Pandora has an upset stomach due to something she's eaten and has thrown her digestive system off. Think about if you have changed her food or given her anything she does not normally get. Hope this helps.
