My 13-week-old puppy has soft stool and pink mucous. What's wrong?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I’m sorry to hear Ralph isn’t feeling well. I recommend taking him to a vet right away. Puppies that age are at risk for dehydrating when they vomit and have loose stools. I would be concerned Ralph could have parvovirus or intestinal parasites. A vet can test him for both and treat as necessary. If he’s dehydrated he will need IV fluids. Also medications to stop the vomiting. Good luck and kisses to Ralph!

This is very concerning as it appears to contain blood, mucus and possibly bowel lining. I recommend an oral worm medication, a specialist intestinal or hydrolyzed diet for 6 weeks and a probiotic/fiber supplement such as fortiflora to rebalance the bowel and rule out any parasitic causes. A full health check, blood tests and possibly ultrasound/xray if not responding or any weight loss, vomiting or weakness is noted

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Soft stools can be normal as they transition from formula to kibble or canned food. If she is otherwise doing well, this may be ok. If it ever becomes consistent diarrhea, have her evaluated by a veterinarian before her scheduled appointment. Keep in mind that it may be best to continue the formula until she is 6 weeks old. Mucus in the stool can be caused by a medical illness such as hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. The pinkish color could be blood, which can also be caused by hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, intestinal parasites, a foreign body, damage to the GI tract, or most serious parvovirus. Parvo is a possibility if Hailey isn't fully vaccinated, and it is too often fatal. Given she is a young puppy and there possibly blood in her stool, I would consult with your vet immediately. The most common reason that we will see soft stool (with or without blood or mucous in it) in a puppy is some type of intestinal parasite. You didn't mention how old Ivy is or if your vet has checked a stool sample, but puppies can commonly have intestinal parasites. Some are microscopic, so the only way to know that they have them is for your vet to look under the microscope. And even if a puppy has been dewormed, it is common for them to have other intestinal parasites since there are no many different types of parasites and they each require a specific type of deworming. So, my first recommendation is to have your veterinarian do a fecal check on Ivy, then decide on an other treatment. Sometimes puppies need a probiotic for their intestinal tract depending on their age and diet history, so be sure to talk to your veterinarian about that as well. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Soft stool has multiple causes. It may be gastrointestinal upset or inflammation, intestinal parasites or due to dietary indiscretions just to name a few. As long as Remy is acting normally, you don't necessarily need to take him to your veterinarian. You should submit a stool sample though to diagnose intestinal parasites. Try withholding food for 24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until the stool is normal then transition slowly to his regular diet. If the soft stool does not resolve or if Remy develops lethargy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain or vomiting them have him examined by your veterinarian.

We can not prescribe medications on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach as the laws require a vet to examine an animal in order to do so. I am glad that Coco is eating, I would start him on a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. This bland diet helps bind up the stool and usually helps the diarrhea. You can also start a dog probiotic, I like Purina Fortiflora. I would also deworm him with pyrantal pamoate or panacur. If the diarrhea started after starting the neopeptine and/or the liv52 I would stop them. I personally do not use human supplements in pets and urge caution in doing so. If the bland diet and probiotic doesn't help Coco needs to be examined by a Vet near you. I hope this helps and I wish Coco the very best!
