My new puppy has runny, bloody, mucousy poop. Should I worry?

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | spayed | 3 months and 15 days old | 9 lbs

Hi! We purchased Missy Saturday June 3rd from All Pets Club in Meriden, CT. She has been doing great House training so far, but I noticed from one of her poop accidents that it looks a bit runny, bloody, and has some mucus. Her first vet appointment is scheduled for June 23rd. Should I be worriedv new dog owner here and want to make sure I'm doing what I should! Thanks!

This type of diarrhea could be due to G.I. parasites, which is not uncommon at all in puppies. This could also be related to the stress of a new home environment or diet change if it's occurred in the past week or so. There are over-the-counter deworming medication. However you may want to contact your veterinarian and see if they want you to bring in a fecal sample so they can tell you for sure if she has G.I. parasites.

Generally speaking deworming medication it's fairly safe and would not be harmful if your puppy did not have parasites. However there are some G.I. parasites that require prescription strength deworming medication. But your veterinarian could do the fecal test and tell you if that is the case.

This blood could be caused by a sudden change in diet, intestinal worms, eating something rotten, a foreign body, or a severe illness. To be safe, I would call a vet now to see if you can get him in this weekend. If you can't get him in this weekend, it's fine to wait until Monday to have him seen since he's otherwise acting normally. If he starts vomiting, stops eating, or becomes very lethargic, take him into an ER vet immediately. I hope this helps!

It’s most likely the puppy. I would bring a stool sample in for them to check for parasites including coccidia and giardia. Then they can give the right medication to clear this up. Either one could be the cause of his bloody discharge and need to be identified quickly so that he can start treatment right away. Blood in the poop can be caused by intestinal worms, a stomach illness, sudden change in diet, eating something rotten, a foreign body, or a severe illness like parvo. Because poop in the poop can have some very serious causes and it's been going on for a few days, it's time to see the vet. The vet can diagnose what is causing it and can treat her. My 6-month puppy has runny poop and a drop of blood. Should I worry?

Luke's runny poop could be caused by intestinal worms (if he's not up to date with his deworming treatments), or it could be a GI illness or he ate something rotten. The drop of blood in his poop could due to to irritation of the GI tract from the diarrhea. Since's his poop is normal now, just keep an eye on him for now. If you keep seeing blood in his poop or he has runny poops, I'd take him into the vet. I hope this helps!

This sounds like she may have intestinal worms. I recommend using a puppy deworming treatment dosed carefully for her weight and repeated as per directions. A probiotic is also recommended to promote recovery. If she develops a fever or loss of appetite she must be seen by your vet

My puppy's poop is bloody, gooey, grey, and watery. What should I do?

The most common reason that we will see soft stool (with or without blood or mucous in it) in a puppy is some type of intestinal parasite. You didn't mention how old Ivy is or if your vet has checked a stool sample, but puppies can commonly have intestinal parasites. Some are microscopic, so the only way to know that they have them is for your vet to look under the microscope. And even if a puppy has been dewormed, it is common for them to have other intestinal parasites since there are no many different types of parasites and they each require a specific type of deworming. So, my first recommendation is to have your veterinarian do a fecal check on Ivy, then decide on an other treatment. Sometimes puppies need a probiotic for their intestinal tract depending on their age and diet history, so be sure to talk to your veterinarian about that as well. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Why is my puppy pooping milky substance with blood after deworming?

Poor Luna! I can definitely understand being worried - it's always scary to see blood or other abnormalities in your dog's stool. The good news is, if she is eating and drinking normally, active, and not vomiting, it's extremely unlikely that she would have parvo or any other serious illness - puppies with parvo are usually very lethargic, not eating, and vomiting frequently. So it doesn't sound like this is likely to be an issue with Luna :) There are lots of things that could cause a milky substance like this with some traces of blood. Colitis, or irritation in the large intestine, can sometimes cause mucus with streaks or flecks of blood to be seen in the stool. This could also occur due to eating something she shouldn't have, or with a minor intestinal infection of some kind. She could also potentially have an infection in her anal glands, which are two scent glands located on either side of the rectum. If she is acting normal apart from this, it's not likely to be an emergency - but if the problem continues, it would be best to call your regular vet or take Luna in for a recheck exam to make sure that everything is okay.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Sandy. I would recommend that she sees her veterinarian today due to the blood in the stool. Bright red blood in the stool is typically due to inflammation in the colon. This can be due to parasites, but there are other causes as well. This bleeding allows intestinal bacteria access to the bloodstream. This can have serious consequences. For this reason, she may require an antibiotic in addition to deworming treatment based on results of fecal testing. I hope this information helps!
