My puppy has diarrhea with mucus and yellow stool. Should I see a vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 21 days old | 17 lbs

My 11 week old American staffordshire terrier has had diarrhea for 5 days now and it came out of nowhere. He was on high protein kibble. For the last 2 days I've been feeding him a Bland chicken and rice diet. I have not seen an improvement and now there is tons of mucus in his stool and now I'm really concerned because this morning he pooped out just a small amount of mucus and very little bit of yellow stool. He's acting very normal, energy levels are high and he sleeps his normal schedule.

I would recommend a vet check up for Duke. He could have intestinal parasites such as hookworms, coccidia or giardia. None of these can be seen in the stool. The vet will likely get a stool sample to check for parasites or eggs under the microscope.

There are so many things that can cause diarrhea and straining to defecate in dogs. There is no way for me to tell your for sure. The most common reasons for this in young dogs is internal parasites or a viral disease (ie: parvo). It could be due to dietary indiscretion if she ate something abnormal.

I strongly recommend you get her to your vet for an exam. If she was an older dog my answer would be different. In puppies is not recommended to wait on diagnostics when having these issues even if they seem fine now. I am worried about the mucous and the reddish color to the stools. Please take her in for an exam and get the stool tested for parasites and her tested for parvo.

Changes from diet can appear very fast, but if i had to guess she came with this from the breeder. i strongly recommend taking her to the vet today in order to get it treated, it could be a serious gastrointestinal infection as well.

Hi there!

Yes, quickly transitions to a new food can cause gastrointestinal upset which can present as diarrhea with mucous or even a bit of blood in the stool. Other causes may be intestinal parasites which are common in puppies.

I would recommend adding plain canned pumpkin to his food to help firm up his stool and take a fecal sample to your veterinarian for testing soon.

I am sorry to hear about your puppy! I would recommend scheduling an examination at a veterinarian for Bolt and bringing a sample of the stool with you. One of the most common causes of diarrhea in puppies is intestinal parasites such as roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms, as well as Coccidia and Giardia. We don't normally see the parasites with the naked eye, so tests in the vet clinic must be done to test for the parasites. If your puppy becomes lethargic, starts vomiting, or has bloody diarrhea these can be signs of a virus called Parvovirus and the puppy should be seen by the vet right away.

My dog has yellow, foul-smelling diarrhea but acts normal. Vet?

Given that Duke has had diarrhea for a couple of days now, yes I would take him into a vet. Because he is acting normal, eating normally, and gaining weight, I wouldn't rush him into an ER vet. See if you can find a vet open for normal business hours on Sunday, or take him into the vet first thing Monday. Do rush him into a vet asap if he stops eating, becomes lethargic, starts vomiting, you see blood in his feces, and/or stops drinking water. I hope this helps!

Thanks for submitting your question regarding Marmaduke. He needs to see his veterinarian again. Fecal testing will be performed. If it was done on his first visit, it may be repeated or additional tests recommended. Depending on his results, medication will likely be prescribed. A diet change to a prescription low fat diet may be beneficial as well. I typically do not recommend extended fasting on puppies as is common in adults with diarrhea. He is growing and needs to eat. My dog's poop has yellow, egg-like mucus. Should I be worried?

I'm sorry to hear that Bullet is having trouble with his bowel movements. There are some reasons that he would have mucoid/yellow colored diarrhea. He could have dietary indiscretion causing gastroenteritis (eating something that didn't agree with him), intestinal parasites or something more systemic. If your dog is not eating, acting lethargic and having diarrhea or anything else concerning, I would take him to your veterinarian to get a full check up. If your dog is eating and doing well otherwise, you can try some supportive care at home such as a bland diet (boiled chicken and rice) and see if his stools become more normal. If so, you can continue the diet for 2-3 days and slowly transition him back to his normal food. If he does not get better, I recommend taking him to your veterinarian.

Why is my dog's poop yellow, soft, and has mucus after diarrhea?

This sounds like at this point Billy should really see your vet to have his stool checked for parasitse. Not all preventatives will cover all types of worms that pets can get, so it is best to have this checked. Most preventatives will prevent only 2-3 potentialy worms that pets can get. Until you can get Billy in to be seen by your vet it is best to offer him 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) to help solidify his stools and also a probiotic (Culturelle over the counter wokrs well) daily to help stabilize the stools. Most pets with loose stool like this will need a short course of antibiotics, so it is best to get him seen by your vet on Monday if the stool is still abnormal.
