My puppy has diarrhea with mucus. Is it worms? Should I go to the vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 11 months and 22 days old | 8 lbs

My puppy has had diarrhea for about 2 days now but last night it became more consistent. Her poop is very runny and sometimes even has a mucus/plastic-like cast around it. Should I be worried? What treatment can I give her or should I take her to the Vet?

The number one reason for puppies to have diarrhea with mucus around it is intestinal parasites (worms). It is best to take her to the vet for an exam so they can run a fecal test and then treat her accordingly.

Many types of intestinal parasites, including worms, can cause diarrhea so a stool sample exam would be a very good idea. Often times feeding a bland diet such as boiled chicken and rice can help improve diarrhea. If she is not improving, if she has blood or mucus in the stool, or if she starts vomiting or not eating then she should be evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Oreo. I would recommend that he sees his veterinarian if his symptoms persist. Being such a small breed dog, it will be easy for him to become dehydrated if the diarrhea continues. Common causes of diarrhea in puppies include parasites, bacterial or viral infections or something in the diet not agreeing with him. His veterinarian will likely run fecal tests and prescribe medication for him. In the meantime, encourage him to drink plenty of water. Feed him small amounts of his dog food. Do not give any treats. Diarrhea with mucus can be due to a variety of reasons, including intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion, food intolerance, or another underlying issue. I would recommend having her evaluated by her regular veterinarian, have any necessary testing done (fecal analysis, etc) and start any treatment (probiotic/antidiarrheal) that she may need to resolve it. Otherwise, a bland diet such as boiled skinless chicken and rice or an intestinal canned diet with additional probiotics such as fortiflora or canikur can help the gut to rebalance and repair. Thanks for submitting your question regarding Marmaduke. He needs to see his veterinarian again. Fecal testing will be performed. If it was done on his first visit, it may be repeated or additional tests recommended. Depending on his results, medication will likely be prescribed. A diet change to a prescription low fat diet may be beneficial as well. I typically do not recommend extended fasting on puppies as is common in adults with diarrhea. He is growing and needs to eat. My new puppy has runny, bloody, mucousy poop. Should I worry?

This type of diarrhea could be due to G.I. parasites, which is not uncommon at all in puppies. This could also be related to the stress of a new home environment or diet change if it's occurred in the past week or so. There are over-the-counter deworming medication. However you may want to contact your veterinarian and see if they want you to bring in a fecal sample so they can tell you for sure if she has G.I. parasites. Generally speaking deworming medication it's fairly safe and would not be harmful if your puppy did not have parasites. However there are some G.I. parasites that require prescription strength deworming medication. But your veterinarian could do the fecal test and tell you if that is the case.
