My dog's poop is runny with mucus for 12 hours. Is this serious?

Diarrhea with mucus can be due to a variety of reasons, including intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion, food intolerance, or another underlying issue. I would recommend having her evaluated by her regular veterinarian, have any necessary testing done (fecal analysis, etc) and start any treatment (probiotic/antidiarrheal) that she may need to resolve it. As long as Aurora is eating, drinking, and acting normally without any significant coughing or sneezing, I would not be overly concerned about a bit of mucus in her stool or a mild running nose. If the mucus becomes a recurrent issue, it would be worth having her evaluated by the vet to assure that she doesn't have intestinal parasites or other concerns. If the runny nose worsens or if the discharge becomes yellow, green, or bloody, she would also need veterinary attention. Not to worry! On a side note, I would not recommend taking Aurora for walks around the neighborhood where she has access to any areas where other dogs have been previously until she has finished her vaccine series (over 16 weeks of age). She could acquire parvovirus, which is a serious gastrointestinal virus, from exposure to areas where infected dogs may have previously walked since this virus lives in the soil for years. There is always some mucus in stool. It aids in defecation. An increased amount can be due to some inflammation in the intestine. If she had intestinal parasites and was recently treated, this could be the cause. If she is behaving normally, you can monitor her at home. Consider a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until the stool is normal then transition slowly to her regular diet. Symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian include lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain.

If Parker is otherwise normal, I would recommend initiating a bland diet of chicken and rice and feed this until the symptoms resolve. That is good that you actually took photos! It’s so much easier to see the stool than to get a verbal description. Loose stool can be a sign of many conditions and if you are seeing frequent signs of it, it could indicate parasites, inflammatory bowel disease, bacterial over growth or just dietary intolerance. At 2 years old, Harley is not likely to have other conditions that can cause frequent soft stools like liver or kidney disease, or lymphoma but it is possible. Take a look around her environment and see if there’s anything she could’ve gotten into in the house or the yard. Dogs will often eat things that upset their stomach’s like dead earthworms or garbage. I recommend to call your veterinarian and let them know what is happening. They may ask to see Harley earlier or they may post pone her vaccines. If Harley is acting completely normal, is not having any vomiting and has a normal appetite, this could just be a passing thing. Go ahead and switch her to a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (25%) and boiled plain white rice (75%). It will measure out cup for cup of just like her dog food. Feed her this for 24 hours and if things are looking better wean her back to her regular food over a couple days. if Harley is showing signs of illness, then I would recommend to have her seen today if possible. This can be normal, and it can be common to see a bit of mucous at the end of the poop. I'd only be concerned if there is blood as well in Luna's poop, she's having diarrhea, and/or vomiting. I hope this helps!

The number one reason for puppies to have diarrhea with mucus around it is intestinal parasites (worms). It is best to take her to the vet for an exam so they can run a fecal test and then treat her accordingly.
