My puppy drank a lot of water and is now shivering. Is this okay?

There could be a couple of reasons why Rosie is shivering. Shivering could be caused by pain, fever, anxiety, or nervousness. Given she recently saw the vet and had had no problems, I would suspect nervousness might be the cause. She's new to your home, and that is a stressful adjustment. As long as she is eating and drinking normally, going to the bathroom normally, and otherwise acting normal, I would not be too concerned about it. I hope this helps!

Hello, sorry to hear about your pup. There are several causes for increased drinking and decreased appetite. However, it may be that he is just a bit cold. Some other causes could include anxiety. Finally underlying metabolic diseases such as kidney disease, cushings, hypothyroidism, or other forms of GI disease may cause this as well. If he continues to do this then he should be evaluated by a veterinarian. Diagnostics may include bloodwork, an abdominal x-ray, or even an ultrasound. Hope this helps and best of luck.

The only concern with milk is that it's not well-digested by adults and can lead to diarrhea. While Sakura should be off of milk by now (I see that she is over four months old), she likely has digestive enzymes for it and should be able to tolerate it well. The fact that it was cold is not too concerning for hypothermia in a dog this age, but she appears to be quite small (3.4lbs), so she it makes sense that she would get a chill from drinking a fair amount of cold fluid. However, as long as she's warm and acting normal, there's nothing else that needs to be done and she should be fine. She is probably shivering because her body is trying to adjust after losing so much food and fluid when she vomited. Try to keep her calm and comfortable for now. I am sorry to hear about your pug puppy. I would recommend bringing him to a veterinarian for evaluation. When I hear of a puppy having this type of sign after a meal (if it is repeated, not just one isolated incident) I worry about a portosystemic liver shunt which you can read at here https://www.vin.com/veterinarypartner/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4952622. If the shivering is just random or didn't recur it could be due to being cold, being scared or in pain, or a neurological issue. An exam is recommended if the shivering continues to help ascertain if the dog has a medical problem.

You can monitor him at home for the next 2-3 hours as long as he is not extremely bloated. Eating too much kibbles is more dangerous that eating wet food but I assume that at his age he ate some wet food only ? Some dogs are very thirsty after eating too much food but please do not offer him a lot of water as this may cause further stomach distension. So, your puppy may be sleepy and lethargic for a the next couple of hours then he should get better. However, if he looks in pain and the abdomen is hard and very bloated you should contact your local vets to get help.

Drooling can sometimes indicate issues such as nausea or stomach upset, or can sometimes happen if there is something suck in the mouth or throat causing irritation. If he is shaking and drooling and is not improving, it is best to seek veterinary care right away, especially since Tanjiro is so young.
