My dog vomited and is shivering and whining. What should I do now?

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 1 month old | 23 lbs

My 2 y/o pug, Dixie, just vomited. Now she is lying on the bed shivering like she's cold, but it's not cold in here. She's drinking water just fine and is not lethargic, but I've never seen her shiver like this. She's also started quietly whining. What should I do?

She is probably shivering because her body is trying to adjust after losing so much food and fluid when she vomited.

Try to keep her calm and comfortable for now. You may want to see if she needs to get up and walk outside. If her abnormal behavior continues for more than a few hours you should consider taking her to be examined by the vet.

Shivering and whining are signs of pain. If she’s eating and drinking you can just keep an eye on her at home. Poor girl! It sounds like Binny is very dehydrated. Because there are so many causes of vomiting, diarrhea, and inappetance in dogs it's impossible to say what one thing might be causing this. She could have an intestinal obstruction, cancer, GI parasites, a food sensitivity, infection, endocrine disease, kidney disease, liver disease, or toxin exposure (among other things).

Binny's signs are very concerning to me and she needs to be examined by a veterinarian right away. She may need blood tests and X-rays to diagnose her. The sooner treatment is started the better her chances for a recovery.

Poor Maggie! Shivering and vomiting are both very non-specific signs of illness that could be due to almost anything, so it's hard to say what might be wrong without being able to examine her and run some tests. Since she has been sick for 3-4 days now and the problem has not resolved, I would recommend taking her to the vet today for an exam. He/she can do blood work, x-rays, or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem and see what kind of treatment is needed.

My puppy is shaking and vomiting. Is this serious? What should I do?

Yes, it sounds like Wonder is painful (shaking), and not herself due to the vomiting. She may also have a fever which could make her lethargic. She is a young dog so most likely she has a stomach upset from something she ate. If she can't hold anything down you should take her to your veterinarian for treatment. She could have eaten something bad, or have something caught in her stomach or intestines. They will do an exam then most likely blood work and an X-ray if needed to find the specific reason she is sick. Then they can prescribe the appropriate treatment. This is a fairly common reason dogs get sick and usually they improve quickly. Puppy throwing up and shaking after flea meds, what to do at home?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If there is no further vomiting then she should be ok as this may be an isolated episode. However, if this continues, she should be evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. She may be dehydrated from the vomiting and the shivering may not be due to her being cold but may be due to her not feeling well. Dogs can sometimes get growly when they do not feel well. The question is why does she not feel well and what is making her vomit. There are numerous reasons for vomiting including ingestion of a foreign body, pancreatitis, viral or bacterial infections, liver or kidney disease, and more. My dog threw up, is shivering, and not eating. What should I do?

Poor Ava sounds pretty sick, and she may have a stomach illness. She could be trembling because she has a fever, and I'm concerned that she's not eating much. Try feeding her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If she refuses to eat the bland diet, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. My puppy threw up foam, shivering, and uncomfortable. Vet visit?

I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian. I am concerned she is shaking after episodes of vomiting. You can take her temperature at home. Normal for a dog is 99-102.5. Unfortunately many things can cause vomiting like indigestion, foreign material, infections, pyometra, toxins and foreign objects. Since she is not feeling well a vet visit will help break down what is going on for proper treatment.
