My puppy has a red boil-like bump near his privates. Should I worry?

Hi and thanks for posting. I wouldn't worry too much unless it is red, inflamed, itches, has discharge coming it or if you notice it getting larger or other similar lesions appear. Then it is time to see your veterinarian to get it checked out.

Hello, this looks like a very mild staph infection, very common in very young puppies. You can bathe your puppy with a mild antibacterial soap or shampoo, one with benzoyl peroxide or chlorhexidine. Allow the soap to remain in contact with the skin for 5-10 minutes before rinsing. Repeat this 1-2x a week & the skin should look better soon. If the skin does not look better soon, please see your veterinarian. Thank you.

You can try to use chlorhexidine containing pads (such as the Douxo chlorhexidine 3% PS pads) to clean the are twice daily for 7 days. You may find these online or at your local pet store. If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good day!

Sometimes it does require antibiotics to take care of it. You can bathe him with a medicated shampoo containing chlorhexidine which you may get at your local pet store. You can bathe him twice weekly for 2 weeks. If it does not improve, have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck!

This is probably not serious. I recommend feeling it and writing down how big it is every month. I don’t expect it to change but if it does start to grow or becomes painful then please take him in for an exam. I would also point this out to your veterinarian at his yearly exam. Hello. It looks like Chunk has a bit of dermatitis going on. It may have started out with a little irritation, & with time, a staph infection has become evident. It is always best to see your veterinarian about this, but in the meantime, you can mix a dab or 1% hydrocortisone cream with a dab of triple antibiotic & lightly coat the area twice a day. This looks like a small pustule - like a pimple from an infected hair follicle. I suggest you use these medicated pads on that lesion 1-2 times per day. If after a few days it does not start to look better OR it looks worse, then he needs to see a vet.
