Why does my 7-month-old puppy pee in his kennel when we leave?

It's often easier for puppies to "hold it" during the night when they would normally be sleeping, vs. during the day when they're more likely to be awake - so this could be the reason she's having accidents. It's also possible that she has separation anxiety, which often causes dogs to have potty accidents while the owner is away. I would recommend having a neighbor or dog sitter come by once or twice during the day to take her out for potty breaks as a first step. If this resolves the problem, then it's likely that she just can't hold her bladder for that long during the day just yet. If the accidents continue, then I would be very concerned that she may be anxious and upset when you're gone. In that case, I would recommend talking to your veterinarian about anti-anxiety medication and a training plan to address her anxiety.

The most common cause of housetraining accidents like this that only occur when you're not home is separation anxiety - so I suspect that your dog may be quite stressed and anxious when you're gone. If you're unsure, you can set up a video camera to record him the next time you go out - it's usually quite easy to tell based on the video if this is an anxiety-related problem or not. I would suggest leaving a special long-lasting treat of some kind for him every time you leave the house, such as a Kong toy stuffed with peanut butter. This will help to keep him busy and encourage him to settle, and over time will help to decrease his anxiety by giving him something to look forward to when you leave. You can also try a DAP pheromone collar along with a natural calming supplement like Zylkene or Composure. If these things don't help, I would recommend taking your dog to the vet for a check-up to make sure that there is not an underlying medical issue contributing to the problem. You can also discuss the possibility of prescription anti-anxiety medication for him if needed.

When you get home, don't say anything or acknowledge Rogue in any way. Walk over to his crate, open it, then walk immediately to the door and outside. Once outside, say the phrase you have been using for housetraining (do your business, etc). Once he has gotten up from completely eliminating, then lay on the praise and attention. Rott is a very handsome guy! I see that he is only about five months old, so one possibility is that he simply isn't fully housetrained yet. Most puppies are at least 8-10 months old before they are fully reliable in the house without supervision. It's also possible that he may have some separation anxiety, as potty accidents when left alone are a very common symptom of this problem. I would recommend confining Rott to a crate while you're gone, if possible. This will make it much less likely that he will have accidents or get into other trouble. If he gets upset in the crate, you can also try leaving him in a puppy-proofed room with hard floors so that accidents will be easier to clean up. You can set up a video camera to record him while you're gone, to see if he seems anxious or not - this is a good way to help determine the problem. If he does have separation anxiety, I would recommend discussing this problem with your veterinarian since he may need anti-anxiety medication along with training to help him learn to be more comfortable by himself.

I'm sorry Luna is having trouble crate training. I would try to make it as pleasant an experience as possible, such as rewarding her for going in the crate and sitting quietly. You can also put her in there during times you aren't actually leaving, and then reward her when you come back and let her out so that she knows you will always return. It may also just take some time and her getting older to be more comfortable by herself. Good luck!

You did not mention if this is a new problem with Kash or an ongoing problem. If Kash was previously kennel trained and has just started going in his kennel, then I would certainly recommend having your veterinarian examine him and check a urine and/or fecal sample to make sure there isn't a medical reason for this. If a medical reason has been ruled out, then I would work on positive reinforcement when he goes outside. That may involve longer walks (rather than just going inside as soon as he goes), treats when he goes outside or verbal praise/excitement when he goes outside. You may also need to change when you walk him. For example if he tends to go 30 minutes after eating, then you may need to wait a little after eating to take him on a walk. And if you just take him outside in a yard instead of out on a walk, then you may want to start walking him. You may want to work on crate training Kronos, or start taking him to a potty location more often. A puppy generally needs to go every 1-2 hours at Kronos' age, so you will want to have yourself or someone take him to the potty spot, make sure he goes, and then remove him from the area so he can't lay in it. He likely doesn't quite understand what is going on yet at such a young age.
