My puppy cries and pees in her crate when I leave. What can I do?

Begin with crating her for very short periods of time. Gradually increase that time as she acclimates. This will take time and requires patience and consistency. Offer a special toy or treat as a distraction. Praise and reward her as she acclimates. A pheromone product, such as the Adaptil collar or DAP plug in diffuser, may help to decrease anxiety. This same method can be used to acclimate her to your absence. Additionally, you can prepare to leave several times daily then put everything away and stay or actually leave. Upon your return, ignore Lily Belle for 15 minutes or until she is calm. Do not make a big deal about coming or going. Consider a pet day care program or having a dog walker visit during the day. At her age, she should not be crated for more than 5 hours before being let out to relieve herself. This time can increase as she matures. The general rule is 1 hour of crate time per month of age plus an additional hour.

Beagles are VERY smart dogs! I think putting a puppy pad in the crate to give her a bathroom option is fine. Most dogs do not like to urinate or defecate in their crates because it is like their own den, but if she has to go to the bathroom she will. I think the best thing for house training is being consistent and giving her positive reenforcement when she goes outside, such as treats and praise right after she goes. Make sure you don't discipline her if she goes in her crate or in the house, as she is still learning and forgot she did it as soon as she walks off. At 10 weeks old I don't expect a puppy even as smart as Luna to be fully house trained. Keep working on it and she will get there!

Poor, Luna, the crate bit her! When you are home, continue to encourage her to be comfortable with the crate. You can try switching out bedding or blankets inside, place it in a different area of the house, or place blankets over it to give it a different feel. When you are home, throw treats inside without shutting the door. Play with toys in and around the crate. Feed her inside the crate. Give her some time before locking her in there again, and I am sure she will come around.

Young puppies like this are often anxious about being left alone, even if they're just in a crate across the room. You can help him learn to enjoy being in his crate by giving him a special long-lasting treat each time you put him in - something like a Kong toy stuffed with peanut butter works very well for many puppies. This will help to keep him busy and encourage him to settle, and will also teach him to associate good things with being in his crate.

When potty training a puppy, there will be steps forward and step backwards. It can be expected the puppy will have accidents while they are being potty trained. I wouldn't let Charlie have any water before going into the crate, and you are doing the right thing by putting her outside before going in the crate and only leaving her for a maximum of 3.5 hours. Cute pup! It sounds like you are on the right track working toward rewarding her for calm behavior rather than whining and crying. If she is needing to get up a bit more (can happen as the bladder is still growing), trying to set and alarm and time going out before she gets too antsy may help keep her calm the entire time so she doesn't get to the point of whining. However, it seems like you have a pretty good plan in place and Harley is on her way to being a good puppy. :)
