Why is my puppy peeing frequently, having accidents, and in pain?

Pet's info: Dog | Havanese | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 1 day old | 9.3 lbs

Hello,I have a havanese dog that is 17 weeks old and I'm training him to pee outside or on a diaper. If not outside he usually pees on a diaper. Yesterday he went to pee 3 times in less than an hour without drinking large amounts of water and never on the diaper. The first time he didn't event stand up to pee so he got it all over his body, the third time he did it with an arched back and he never pees like that. I looked like he couldn't control it or like he was in pain. Please help

Hi, sorry to hear Oly isn't feeling well. There is a chance he can have a urinary tract infection, which will cause a dog to urinate frequently and in small amounts. This can be treated by a vet with antibiotics. I recommend bringing him to see a vet if these symptoms persist. There is no home remedy you can do for this. It is not an emergency unless he is not urinating or seems to be in pain. I suggest taking him to the vet tomorrow and bringing a urine sample if possible, or not allowing him to urinate at least an hour or so before the appointment so they can get a sample. He may have a urinary infection and that can cause pain and discomfort aking with having to go more often. If he hurt his back playing that can alter their stance and trying to hold it longer leading to accidents. It is best have a urine sample checked

Hi. Sorry Oly is having problems. Sounds like he needs to be seen. Especially if he is in pain. He may have an injury, a urinary tract infections, or something else. It is hard to say. But it sounds he needs to be seen tonight or first thing I the am.

I would recommend you take Monty in for an exam with your vet as soon as possible as this could be an emergency. If he is unable to urinate, he is at risk for having kidney problems and even kidney failure. He could have a simple urinary tract infection that is causing him to strain while urinating, or could even have stones causing an obstruction in his urinary tract. The best thing to do is to take him in and have him evaluated. He likely needs to have a urinalysis done to see if he has an infection or even crystals in his urine. Hopefully he just needs oral medication, usually antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, to resolve the issue. Some dogs that have bladder stones do need surgery to have them removed. I hope that Monty gets back on track soon!

I'm not sure what's going on from your description. That is a lot of different clinical signs that I can't immediately draw in to a likely cause. It is concerning that his stomach is hard (and distended perhaps?), and any straining to urinate is always an emergency. I'd recommend taking him to a vet ASAP, an emergency clinic tonight if at all possible.

When bacteria develop in the bladder, it inflames the urethra (the tube out which a male dog urinates), and causes a dog to feel like he has to pee all the time. Your puppy may have a urinary tract infection. Since puppies can deteriorate very quickly (they heal quickly as well), I suggest you make an appointment with your veterinarian. He may need to be prescribed antibiotics and pain medicine.

If the antibiotics didn't make much difference, I'd be suspicious of puppy vaginitis, which is a relatively common inflammatory condition that can lead to accidents and sometimes make them more susceptible to urinary infections. It generally resolves with age. I would also check for a stricture (this may require sedation as they don't love vaginal palpation...). For now, since your vet hasn't been able to check a urinalysis, that would be the first priority. See if you can get a sample- sneak a small container under her when she squats. If you have to hold onto the sample a few hours before dropping it at your vet, stick it in the fridge, but the fresher the better. If you're having no luck, your vet can collect a sterile sample via cystocentesis. Hope this helps.

He could have an infection causing the problem. A vet can test a urine sample to look for infection and other abnormalities. Besides, encouraging him to drink water to try and keep his urine more dilute, there really isn't much you can do at home without veterinary care. If he has an infection than he will need an antibiotic.

Oh my. Poor puppy. Female puppies are high risk for getting urinary tract infections and his causes frequent urination, foul smelling urine, and accidents in the home. This is likely what is going on with Hazel. She needs to be seen by your local vet for a urinalysis (urine test) and oral antibiotics if confirmed. She also sounds like she has an upper respiratory infection as well. Both issues can respond to the same antibiotic medication so schedule an appt with your local vet soon to get her the proper treatment. Why is my potty-trained dog suddenly peeing more and having accidents?

I’m sorry to hear about Bruno! I am concerned that he might have developed a urinary tract infection. There is one medication (prednisone/prednisolone) they can caused increased urination and drinking but those should stop as soon as the medication was stopped. The UTI may be even more likely if he’s recently hurt his back or neck because they tend not to posture/squat all the way or for long enough when it hurts. So they hold their urine longer than they might otherwise do or don’t empty their bladder fully. These can predispose to UTI. Take Bruno (and a urine sample if you can catch one) in to the vet to do a urine test and get on antibiotics if that’s what it turns out to be. The urine test will also screen for other causes of accidents like diabetes and kidney disease. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and Bruno!

Hi there. While it is normal for young puppies to have accidents while being potty training, it sounds like Heera is having some abnormal difficulties. I recommend taking her to the veterinarian. She may have a urinary tract infection, but she could also have a condition called ectopic ureters.
