My puppy's intestines are hanging out. Is this normal? What to do?

Even if the intestines are placed back in the abdominal cavity, & the defect repaired, it does not have a great chance for survival, but only time will tell. I hope your mom can have the puppy seen very soon.

This is an emergency, so hopefully you can get a hold of the vet soon, but it would be worthwhile to get sadie to the vet clinic as soon as possible. I'm assuming the vet is on-call. If they don't respond in the next 15 minutes, then it may be worthwhile to take Sadie to the nearest vet emergency clinic. Definitely do NOT attempt to put the intestines back in the body. You'll have to stabalize the wound for transport. The best thing to do is cover the exposed intestines with sterile gauze soaked in sterile saline, then to place a dry bulky dressing over that that can be tied around the belly. If this is not possible, then there are other options. Your puppy has a prolapsed rectum. The first thing you need to do is put some water on it to moisten it, then put a thick coat of vaseline on the pink area to keep it moist. I am afraid you will need to take this puppy to a vet as the vet will have to reposition the rectum back inside and then make a purse string suture around the anus to keep it from prolapsing again, yet leave enough space for feces to pass. This is a tricky job and easily botched by a lay person. So you should take this puppy to a vet.

A rectal prolapse requires veterinary attention. Your veterinarian may cleanse and reduce the prolapse and suture it in place. There is usually an underlying cause (parasites, diarrhea, etc) which should be diagnosed and treated to prevent recurrence.

No, this is not normal at all, and it will not go away. It sounds like Magic has a vaginal prolapse, and she has to see a vet for this immediately. It needs to be replaced into it's correct anatomical position, and given that it's been out of her vaginal for a month, it absolutely has to be corrected now. Please take Magic into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see her now.

I'm very sorry this puppy is so sick! Newborn puppies are extremely fragile, and when they are sick, they have to see a vet immediately. She needs medical treatment from a vet right away for her best chance of survival, and I would take her into one now.

This does look like it could be a hernia, although I cannot be 100% certain based on a picture. You can try to gently palpate the area and see if you are able to reduce the swelling by pushing it back in toward the abdominal cavity. If the swelling reduces easily then it is most likely a hernia. If it is firm or painful something else is probably going on. Hernias in young puppies can sometimes resolve on their own but sometimes will need surgery (but not until the pup is older). The danger in leaving a hernia untreated is that a portion of the intestine can become entrapped and lose blood supply. This is usually a life threatening situation. Since you are unable to take him to the vet now just try to keep a very close eye on the swelling.
