My calf has bloody intestines hanging out. Is this an emergency?

Rectal prolapse in a lamb usually requires treatment and correction by a veterinarian. In some cases, the lamb may need to be euthanized if the prolapse cannot be corrected, leads to infection, or continues even after treatment. Lambs that have tails docked too short, or that are experiencing illnesses that cause diarrhea or coughing may also have a higher incidence of prolapse. Treatment usually involves fixing any underlying health issues that may be causing the prolapse, injections to reduce swelling/retain the rectum better, or rings to hold in or amputate affected parts of the rectum. It would be best to contact a vet to come out and take a look, especially if this has continued or home treatment hasn't worked.

Your puppy has a prolapsed rectum. The first thing you need to do is put some water on it to moisten it, then put a thick coat of vaseline on the pink area to keep it moist. I am afraid you will need to take this puppy to a vet as the vet will have to reposition the rectum back inside and then make a purse string suture around the anus to keep it from prolapsing again, yet leave enough space for feces to pass. This is a tricky job and easily botched by a lay person. So you should take this puppy to a vet.

Hi, this is a prolapsed rectum, a part of your dog's intestines is coming out through his anus and the longer it stays out the more severe the situation will get. You need to take him to see a vet ASAP. You might need to sign him over to a vet or an organisation that can treat him other ways he is going to deteriorate without treatment and end up just having euthanasia as the only option. If left untreated not only he will die but he will also suffer extensively .. which is not acceptable. Please have him checked over ASAP.

I think you mean "pushing"? This is also called a rectal prolapse. It is commonly found in animals that have diarrhea. In a goat, I would first be thinking about intestinal parasites. I would recommend that Bolt get checked out by a vet to determine the cause and get appropriate treatment. If the prolapse is very bad, he may need a stitch to put it back in place while we work on fixing the problem that started the prolapse in the first place. If the prolapse is very severe, sometimes an animal will need surgery to remove the damaged piece of colon.

I agree that does look pretty severe, and I'm concerned with how red the tissue is in the picture. The problem with a rectal prolapse is that if it is left uncorrected for too long, the circulation of blood to that area becomes compromised and the tissue can die. Quinn needs to see a vet now to have this treated. I can't say how much it would cost to fix, as it may be able to be replaced manually, but it may require stitches to keep it in place. In addition, she may need sedation to have it replaced, and she may need testing to diagnose the initial cause of the rectal prolapse so that can be treated to prevent this from happening again. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. I would recommend that you have Sweetums examined by the vet. You have described a rectal prolapse, which can be caused by intestinal parasites, irritable bowel disease, diarrhea or constipation, etc. Some pets with chronic rectal prolapse require a surgery to tack the colon to the body wall to keep it in place. If it prolapses too long, it can become ulcerated or infected, which would require surgery to remove the affected portion.

This is the beginning of a rectal prolapse. This is usually due to straining to poop due to parasites. I recommend bringing Jay Crowe to your veterinarian to have this examined and treated. They will check a fecal sample for parasites and give her the correct deworming medication. She will need several deworming treatments to get rid of the parasites. If needed they will lubricate the red area and push it back inside. A rectal prolapse can become very large and is a serious problem that should be treated soon.
