My puppy fell. Something's sticking out of its bottom. What do I do?

It looks like he might have a little rectal prolapse. If your vet isn’t available, you can try to treat this at home as follows: This will sound weird, but bear with me. ;) Get some table sugar, dissolve it in a little water (say maybe 3 tablespoons of sugar and just enough water to dissolve it. Soak the corner of a washcloth, paper towel, or a piece of gauze with the sugar water and then apply it directly to his bottom. Let it be in contact for 10-15 minutes. (Be PATIENT here.). The osmotic pull of the sugar will reduce the swelling in the prolapsed tissue and it may got back in on its own. If it does not, using a gloved hand, use some KY jelly and VERY GENTLY try to push it back in. Be aware that it may pop back out. If it’s a recurrent problem, he may need to see a vet to have a temporary “purse string” suture placed. Make sure he’s been dewormed. Add a little fiber to his diet, about 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of canned pumpkin daily may help “regulate” him, and a dog probiotic would also be a good idea. I hope that’s helpful! This is the beginning of a rectal prolapse. This is usually due to straining to poop due to parasites. I recommend bringing Jay Crowe to your veterinarian to have this examined and treated. They will check a fecal sample for parasites and give her the correct deworming medication. She will need several deworming treatments to get rid of the parasites. If needed they will lubricate the red area and push it back inside. A rectal prolapse can become very large and is a serious problem that should be treated soon. A rectal prolapse can be cause by intestinal parasites, diet or straining to defecate in puppies. If it is a small prolapse, they can do a purse string procedure to hold things in place temporally until the underlying condition is fixed. If this fails or the prolapse is too large, then a major surgery through the abdomen will be needed to permanently tact down the colon to the abdominal wall so it cannot be pushed outward. Once this procedure is done, there is usually no lasting problems or evidence.

Hi, this is a prolapsed rectum, a part of your dog's intestines is coming out through his anus and the longer it stays out the more severe the situation will get. You need to take him to see a vet ASAP. You might need to sign him over to a vet or an organisation that can treat him other ways he is going to deteriorate without treatment and end up just having euthanasia as the only option. If left untreated not only he will die but he will also suffer extensively .. which is not acceptable. Please have him checked over ASAP.

It does not appear to be a traditional case of rectal prolapse. It could be an issue with the internal rectal muscles, or could be normal for her. I would have Daisy Mae checked out by a vet. They can do a thorough physical and neurologic exams, and x-rays to see if there is a congenital disorder. This will help you plan for her future and possibly start special exercises to strengthen her hind end.

That does look odd. As a guess, I would suspect an infection or perhaps a prolapse. I recommend to discuss with the veterinarian some type of anti-inflammatory or even an antibiotic. The vet should also preform a rectal exam to get a better idea of the anatomy of the anus. Make sure to keep the area from trauma so She may need to wear an elizabethan collar at all times. She should also not drag her rectum on the ground (and if she does, keep her off rough surfaces). An omega 3 fatty acid supplement will not correct the problem but it may help to decrease inflammation and condition the skin. Prolapses sometimes require surgical correction. This is a partial rectal prolapse or intussuseption (less likely). These two conditions can be usually told apart by doing rectal examination. I understand that your vet did rectal examination and diagnosed partial rectal prolapse. The alternative treatment for rectal prolapse is a minor surgery, when we put the butt back in place and we place a suture around the butt to make sure the rectum doesn't prolapse again. In Mia's case that sounds like the best treatment option to make sure the rectum does not prolapse again.
