Newborn puppy's guts are out of umbilical cord & not nursing.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Unfortunately it sounds like Sunny is very very sick. I would recommend having Sunny into a vet right away. They will check for signs of congenital abnormalities (developement problems) and will see if there is anything that can be done. In the mean-time, you want to keep Sunny warm, but not too hot. Make sure she is not lying directly on the heat pad or she will get burns. You can rub some honey on her gums to help get some glucose into her, and see if you can encourage her to suckle on the mom. Oh dear! No, this is not normal. It looks like this puppy's intestines are hanging out of its abdomen, which is a life-threatening emergency. I would recommend taking it to a veterinarian immediately to see if it can be saved.

I'm very sorry this puppy is so sick! Newborn puppies are extremely fragile, and when they are sick, they have to see a vet immediately. She needs medical treatment from a vet right away for her best chance of survival, and I would take her into one now.

Puppies need to feed approximately ever 2 hours when they are first born; if they don't, they can become dehydrated and also get dangerously low blood sugar levels. If the puppy is not feeding well and seems to not be thriving, I recommend bringing the puppy to your local veterinarian as soon as you can. Puppies can rapidly decompensate and even pass on their own when they aren't thriving. Bottle feeding is not the safest option for feeding puppies, as they can accidentally aspirate the milk into their lungs and develop fatal pneumonia. The safest way to feed newborn puppies is tube feeding, where you pass a feeding tube down into their stomach and directly deliver the food. This should be demonstrated by a veterinarian so you can do it safely. I hope this is helpful!

This sounds serious and I would recommend trying to see another veterinarian if possible. Once neonatal puppies start to decline for whatever reason things can progress rapidly, and often there is not much to do other than offer aggressive supportive care. I would be a little surprised if the umbilical cord incident was related, unless she has an infection that has led to sepsis. This puppy might need to be tube fed, and her blood sugar could be low.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor baby! This puppy is affected by severe debilitating congenital defects. I want to be honest and say I do not think this puppy will survive and if it does it is likely not going to be normal. I would not return it to Dolly and the other litter mates. I would continue to bottle feed the puppy and see how it does over time. If it starts to decline I urge you to humanely euthanize. I hope this helps and I wish you all the very best!

She might have a condition called "Parvovirus" which is a very serious virus that affects puppies, and is more likely if Joplin is unvaccinated. The other possible causes in a puppy include an obstruction in her gut (a blockage from a foreign object (ex. ball) that she ate, or an intussusception (the intestines telescoping in on each other). Also, depending on her age, pyometra is possible along with many other conditions. With what you are describing, I am very concerned that she could die without aggressive care. I strongly recommend you get Joplin to a vet right away, and if your vet is closed go to your closest emergency clinic. They will recommend a test of her poop, as well as possible bloodwork and x-rays, and will likely want to keep her in hospital on IV fluids and medications.
