My 4-month-old puppy's bowel movements are less frequent. Is this normal?

Most dogs only have one bowel movement per day and some only have a bowel movement every other day. As long as a dog is eating, drinking and acting normally, and seems to be having a normal bowel movement without straining, I don’t worry. As puppies grow, their guts mature. Additionally, different diets have different fiber content. Both of these changes can change the frequency of bowel movements. It sounds as though Harley’s bowel movement frequency is completely normal!

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Buzoo is adorable! Puppies do defecated a little more frequently than adult dogs, typically up to 4-5 times in a day. Sometimes puppies will defecate more frequently if they are excited. I recommend keeping a close eye on Buzoo's bowel movements - he should be seen by a vet if you notice that the stool is loose, has mucus or blood in it, or begins vomiting. Frequent bowel movements are not necessarily abnormal. They should have a firm consistency, and not be like diarrhea. I would recommend that you have him on a large breed puppy food to help support his rapidly growing bones. You can try a different brand of food and see if that helps decrease the stool frequency.

As long as she is eating, not vomiting and is active it could just be a fluke and she'll go just fine the following day. The weight and size of a dog depends on genetics and breed. Not all dogs weigh the same, so not all puppies weigh 16 kg at 4 months old. I hope this helps!

Hello, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would not be concerned at this time. Sometimes a sudden change in environment can cause bowel movement irregularities. If Mia still has not had a BM by tomorrow, make sure to mention it to the vet. If she does, it is a good idea to collect in in a plastic bag so that they can use it to check for intestinal parasites, which are common in puppies. I usually recommend that you continue to feed the food she was on from the breeder to avoid digestive upset. Make sure she has access to clean, fresh water, which will help keep stools moist and easy to pass.

This seems to be pretty normal activity for a growing puppy. They tend to fluctuate with stools and also his food requirements are not going to be as much as they were when he was a younger pup (< 6 months of age). He should also only need to eat twice a day now and follow the guidelines on his food bag. Also, since he is eating less he will naturally produce fewer stools. Most pets by the time they are adults will produce 1-2 stools a day normally. I wouldn't change anything that you are currently doing, nor would I be concerned that anything is wrong with Ollie based on this description of events. Now if he develops any signs of illness which include vomiting, diarrhea, and complete disinterest in food, then I would recommend taking him in to your local vet for an exam and treatment. Otherwise, continue to enjoy your pup who is steadily maturing into an adult dog. Puppies do have more bowel movements than adult dogs. Most adult dogs typically have two to three movements a day but this is very much impacted by their food. The brand Royal Canin is low residue in all of their diets and typically has low stool production and maintains a very high-quality.
