Will feeding human food to my puppy lead to them getting parvovirus?

Your veterinarian may have recommended to hold off food for a little bit to reduce the risk of her vomiting it back up. I would contact them to clarify the timeline that they recommended these things. Generally, withholding food for 8-12 hours is sufficient. Also, we do not generally recommend preventing dogs from drinking water. I would allow her access to water, and call your veterinarian to have them clarify why and for how long they don't want Luna to have food. I hope this is helpful!

You can and should start feeding Ivy gently by syringe, if she will not eat on her own, as soon as the vomiting has stopped. I would blenderize canned puppy food with water or purchase a canned recovery diet (like Hill's a/d) from your Vet. Parvo is tough, they usually get worse before they get better. It can take 5-7 days when they are hospitalized to get better. Parvo can be deadly, so if Ivy is non stop vomiting and is losing a lot of fluids she should be rechecked. Puppies die from parvo due to secondary dehydration and sepsis. I hope this helps and I wish Ivy a speedy recovery!

Parvo virus can occur in adult dogs but often is more of a worry in puppies. Rye could have some other infection or a GI foreign body or perforation if he chews or eats bones or other items. Addison's disease, parasites, kidney failure or diabetes mellitus can all cause vomiting. I would recomend getting Rye to vet for physical exam. Depending on exam findings they may recommend tests or may be able to start symptomatic care to help stop the vomitting and get him feeling better. The sooner he is evaluated and treated the easier treatment may be. If he becomes dehydrated or loses too much protein or nutrients from vomiting he may require fluid therapy or more aggressive treatment to recover. I hope Rye feels better soon. I would be very concerned about parvovirus since a littermate died and the virus is extremely contagious and can be fatal. I recommend getting Pup to a vet as soon as possible to have her. tested for the virus. If she is positive, I recommend hospitalization with IV fluid therapy and medications because this virus can cause severe dehydration in a puppy that young. If she is negative, I recommend they test her stool for microscopic parasite eggs. Although she may have been dewormed, not all medications treat all parasites and she may have something that needs to be addressed. Good luck and kisses to Pup!

Hello. It does sometimes take time for the gut to heal after a bad bout of Parvo, & 11 days of treatment says to me this was a tough one. Continue to fed Pluto, but you might want to switch to an intestinal diet or one made for sensitive stomachs & skin. I would try feeding pretty small amounts frequently, rather than 2-3 larger meals a day. Even a tablespoon or two every hour or so might be tolerated better. If your Pluto was not under the care of a vet for this, I would also be concerned about concurrent intestinal parasites, so a good deworming may be necessary. Hi there! Sorry to hear that Saiko is not feeling well. The clinical signs you describe are concerning when they occur in a puppy as they can be seen with serious gastrointestinal infections such as Parvovirus. Other possibilities include intestinal worms and dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. The sooner these conditions are treated the better the outcome tends to be. These types of conditions should not be treated at home. Raw egg does not prevent parvovirus. For this reason, I recommend that you have Saiko evaluated by your veterinarian to check for these possibilities and to start therapy based on findings. The canine parvovirus (CPV) infection is a highly contagious viral illness that affects dogs. Most cases involve puppies that are between six weeks and six months old. Mainly, parvovirus is spread either by direct contact with an infected dog, or indirectly, by the fecal-oral route. Introducing unvaccinated young puppies with their weak immunity to other dogs or taking them out where other dogs can freely roam before they are fully vaccinated is the most common way that puppies get infected.
