My dog has Parvo. When can I feed her and what foods are safe?

Once Orioz has stopped vomiting, gently start syringe feeding a well balance canned puppy food (purina proplan puppy, royal canin, Hills, etc). Syringe small amounts several times per day. Add water to the canned food to make it more liquidy so it can pass through the syringe. Skip a feeding if he vomits. Continue syringe feeding until he starts to eat on his own. Thanks for using PetCoach. Depending on the severity of the couse of disease, it can take some puppies several weeks to fully recover. Be sure to feed the food her vet recommends and offer small amounts of food frequently. Do not allow her to eat all she wants at one time. Zoe may be contagious to other puppies for up to 3-4 weeks so should be kept away from other dogs and pups. Depending on how she is doing the vet may recommend vaccination anywhere from 1-3 weeks after she starts eating. She cannot contract Parvo again but does need to be vaccinated against other diseases. Your veterinarian may have recommended to hold off food for a little bit to reduce the risk of her vomiting it back up. I would contact them to clarify the timeline that they recommended these things. Generally, withholding food for 8-12 hours is sufficient. Also, we do not generally recommend preventing dogs from drinking water. I would allow her access to water, and call your veterinarian to have them clarify why and for how long they don't want Luna to have food. I hope this is helpful!

I am glad to hear that Esther is feeling better. Most of these puppies should eat a G.I. friendly diet and not regular puppy food for at least 10 days. Your veterinarian carries special prescription foods that are easy to digest and provide all the needed nutrients. As far as it goes with your other puppy, they should not be together until the other puppy is fully vaccinated. Vaccines do take about 7 to 10 days to take full effect. If you have questions about the efficacy of the vaccines, call your veterinarian. Vaccines given by the veterinarian tend to be more effective than vaccines given at home. These diets break down easier in they system and will help to avoid shocking his system. He should eat the diet for two weeks before gradually transiting back to his normal food. Just regular canned puppy food would be fine. She may not like what you are feeding. Just getting some calories in her is important. If she is drinking on her own or eating canned food well, then you can stop with the Pedialyte - some dogs really don't like the taste. If she won't eat the canned puppy food (which would be best) you can try bland human foods like: *plain white rice *scrambled eggs * boiled chicken breast * plain pasta No butter, oil or spices on the food.

If your dog is recovering from parvo you should not be offering any foods other than his regular diet or bland meals of boiled rice and chicken as the other foods may cause the already irritated intestinal lining to become worse or prolong the irritation. If he is not eating his food there may still be some underlying pain or GI upset. You can offer a bland meal of boiled rice and chicken for a day or so, however if the lack of appetite continues or he does not begin to eat his food it is best to seek veterinary care.
