My puppy has parvo. Why no food or water after treatment?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Parvovirus is a severe gastroenteritis that affect puppies more often. This is a viral infection so there is no direct treatment for the virus so the treatment per se is directed at treating secondary bacterial infections and mostly helping with the clinical symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea and inappetence. This warrants ideally hospitalization with some cases being able to be managed with outpatient care depending on its severity. I recommend that you follow up with a veterinarian who can institute therapy for Loki as soon as possible. The quicker this condition gets treated the better the outcome tends to be. Good luck! Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. So sorry to hear that Nova has parvo but it sounds like you are doing a good job treating her. Just have water available for her to drink if she wants it. She may not be interested in drinking because you are giving the SQ fluids. The biggest thing that seems to help recovery in parvo cases is to get them eating as soon as possible. So, if you can try feeding her some canned puppy food that would be best. The chicken is OK but it does not have all the nutrients and vitamins needed to help her recover quickly. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Hello. It does sometimes take time for the gut to heal after a bad bout of Parvo, & 11 days of treatment says to me this was a tough one. Continue to fed Pluto, but you might want to switch to an intestinal diet or one made for sensitive stomachs & skin. I would try feeding pretty small amounts frequently, rather than 2-3 larger meals a day. Even a tablespoon or two every hour or so might be tolerated better. If your Pluto was not under the care of a vet for this, I would also be concerned about concurrent intestinal parasites, so a good deworming may be necessary. It sounds like Luna has made a pretty impressive recovery from her Parvo diagnosis, and you did a great job caring for her at home. Since she is doing so well with her currently therapy plan, I would continue her medications for the proper length of time as indicated by your veterinarian. I would not recommend stopping any medication earlier than prescribed, as this can sometimes cause dog's clinical signs to reappear. If you have any specific questions about the medications prescribed for Luna, I recommend contacting the veterinarian who prescribed them to see if he/she would like you to continue them for longer than originally prescribed. Otherwise, as long as Luna is otherwise healthy and acting normally at home, I would not be concerned. I hope this is helpful!

You can and should start feeding Ivy gently by syringe, if she will not eat on her own, as soon as the vomiting has stopped. I would blenderize canned puppy food with water or purchase a canned recovery diet (like Hill's a/d) from your Vet. Parvo is tough, they usually get worse before they get better. It can take 5-7 days when they are hospitalized to get better. Parvo can be deadly, so if Ivy is non stop vomiting and is losing a lot of fluids she should be rechecked. Puppies die from parvo due to secondary dehydration and sepsis. I hope this helps and I wish Ivy a speedy recovery!

I'm so sorry to hear that Roxanne is feeling so poorly. No, do not stop her from drinking water, but instead of leaving full bowls of water out, try offering her just a few tablespoons of water every hour. If she starts being able to keep this down, you can gradually increase the amount that you're offering. The fact that she's still so thirsty may indicate that she's still quite dehydrated, despite the fluids under the skin. If you're unable to hospitalize her for IV fluids, you may want to ask your vet if they think she should be receiving a larger volume of the subcutaneous fluids under the skin. Once Orioz has stopped vomiting, gently start syringe feeding a well balance canned puppy food (purina proplan puppy, royal canin, Hills, etc). Syringe small amounts several times per day. Add water to the canned food to make it more liquidy so it can pass through the syringe. Skip a feeding if he vomits. Continue syringe feeding until he starts to eat on his own.
