When can I start puppy grooming? Is 3 months too young for a poodle?

Thanks for visting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Coco is considered to be fully vaccinated 7 days after her 3rd round of vaccines, which is between 14-16 weeks of age. She currently isn't fully vaccinated, so it is best to wait a bit if possible. I would recommend doing puppy wipes or waterless shampoo until then, if you are not too keen on doing a full on bath right now. This can at least get some of the puppy dirt off until she is ideal age for a grooming appt. Another alternative is to have a mobile groomer do her bath or discuss with the grooming facility to see if they take any extra precautions for puppies that aren't fully vaccinated. Puppies are usually vaccinated three times at 8 weeks, 12 weeks and 16 weeks. However, without knowing what particular vaccines have been given to Mimi it is not possible to advise you when she should be vaccinated again and your veterinarian may have good reason for wanting to vaccinate at 6 months. You should not clip Mimi's hair until her adult coat has grown in. This typically happens around 6 months.

You can start trimming puppy nails right away. There is no minimum age to do it, but usually we start when they are being weaned from their mother. It is best to start when they are young and get them used to it. Make sure to use treats and make it a positive experience for them. And make sure that you do not cut them too short. It is better to trim them more freqeuntly. Puppy nails grow very quickly and are very sharp, so I usually recommend trimming puppy nails weekly. Good luck! I typically recommend waiting until a kennel cough (Bordetella) vaccine has been given, but otherwise as long as the groomer requires that all animals are vaccinated it is not too early to see a groomer. In fact, it can be helpful for a younger puppy to be groomed in order to get used to being handled in this way during the prime socialization period between 8-12 weeks of age.

I am not sure I understand your question. It is ok to have a puppy groomed but ideally all the vaccines would be finished before that happens just to decrease exposure. It's also ok if the vet shaves off the fur. It will grow back. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bailey. I typically recommend grooming appointments once puppies have completed their vaccinations. I believe it helps it get them used to frequent grooming while they are still young and more impressionable. I find they are not scared to go as adults, if they have been exposed to it since a young age. The hair clipping can be less (and faster) as puppies as opposed to waiting until she has a long matted coat at a year of age. This will make her first grooming experience more enjoyable. I'm glad you are so pleased with Buddy's grooming! Yes, you can take him into them sooner if he needs a trim with his eyebrows, beard, and nails, but he may not need all the services offered. You can just request having those three things done. I hope this helps :-)
