Can I groom my dog sooner than a month for nails, eyebrows, and beard?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Starting gentle grooming at a young age is a good idea to train Mimi that grooming is OK and good. I would start by just having the instruments (clippers, nail trimmers, etc) near her, and touching her, but not on and not actually trimming or clipping. With this include lots of positive praise and treats. Playing with her toes and nails with your hands on a regular basis helps as well. You can then start grooming in small unstressful bits of time. I am not sure I understand your question. It is ok to have a puppy groomed but ideally all the vaccines would be finished before that happens just to decrease exposure. It's also ok if the vet shaves off the fur. It will grow back. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

I typically recommend waiting until a kennel cough (Bordetella) vaccine has been given, but otherwise as long as the groomer requires that all animals are vaccinated it is not too early to see a groomer. In fact, it can be helpful for a younger puppy to be groomed in order to get used to being handled in this way during the prime socialization period between 8-12 weeks of age.

Azriel is just a puppy still, so you still have plenty of time to train him into the type of adult dog you would like. You need to take things slowly one at a time and can not expect too much in the beginning. All of these tasks need to be rewarded with positive reinforcement. Of the three activities you have described above, I think in general the ear cleaning is probably the easiest and most tolerated. So for example, I would first start by offering praise and reward just for Azriel allowing you to touch and stroke his ears. Eventually move further and further with your hands and fingers to the inside of the ear, continuing to reward and praise. Do this over the course of a week or so. Once you start seeing little to no reaction negatively, start introducing the cleaning aspect of it. If you use q-tips or gauze, first you have to get him used to these. Bring them close to his face so he smell them, and if he doesn't run away, reward him. Eventually, start bringing them towards the ear and touch them to them, rewarding similarly for a neutral response. Move closer and closer to the part that needs to be cleaned until you are actually there. This could take a while but in the end this type of reward based behavior is the way to go. Once comfortable enough, start the actual cleaning process and continue to reward. This should end up working but may take a considerable amount of time depending on how much Azriel hates this activity. Take a very similar approach to the other two things you listed. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bailey. I typically recommend grooming appointments once puppies have completed their vaccinations. I believe it helps it get them used to frequent grooming while they are still young and more impressionable. I find they are not scared to go as adults, if they have been exposed to it since a young age. The hair clipping can be less (and faster) as puppies as opposed to waiting until she has a long matted coat at a year of age. This will make her first grooming experience more enjoyable. All good questions!. Dog's ears are shaped a little bit differently than people's ears. You don't have to be very scared of damaging the ear drums because the canals are L-shaped. As long and you go straight in and do not try and bend a q-tip in a 90 degree angle, there should be very little chance for damage. A cleansing formulation should be available at most pet stores. Deposit this into the ear first, massage at the base of the ear, and then clean the ear with gauze and/or q-tips. Be sure to get most of the liquid out, as leaving residual moisture in the ears can actually cause an infection. As far as teeth, tooth brushes and doggy toothpaste is readily available at your vet or a pet store. You don't have to brush them every night, but once or twice a week would be great. Depending on the color your dog's nails, you can sometimes see precisely just how far you can clip the nails without causing a problem. If you cut too far, you will sever the small blood vessel at the end of the nail and cause some bleeding. These can bleed quite a bit but are easily stopped with something called "Quick Stop", another product available at most pet stores. For long-haired dogs I would use a brush with plenty of wiry bristle on them to break apart any potential knots and mats in the hair. As long as your brush regularly, you shouldn't have to worry about this much, though. The nails can be trimmed down just before the point where you can actually visualize the blood vessel. Alternatively, you can considering using a grinder / dremel to achieve a smoother surface on the nail. In terms of bathing, this can be done anywhere if Rusty doesn't tolerate a tub well. As long as you can get him wet and lathered up, it doesn't really matter what the location is.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would ask your vet for oral (pills) sedatives to try at home. I would also purchase a muzzle to use so he can not bite you. Maybe with the right combination of sedatives and muzzle you will be able to trim around his face and do his nails. Sadly there is a small group of dogs that need injectable sedatives to have their nails done at the Vet. You can also practice with the oral sedatives, using yummy treats and gently play around his face and feet with the hope to desensitize him. It would take time and practice.
