My vet says not to groom my Yorkie puppy until one. Is this true?

Usually around 4 months of age, a yorkie puppy will need some grooming. She should be fully vaccinated before you take her to a groomer. It is best to start early, so your puppy becomes used to the regular grooming and trimming that she will need throughout her life.

I am not sure I understand your question. It is ok to have a puppy groomed but ideally all the vaccines would be finished before that happens just to decrease exposure. It's also ok if the vet shaves off the fur. It will grow back. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

I typically recommend waiting until a kennel cough (Bordetella) vaccine has been given, but otherwise as long as the groomer requires that all animals are vaccinated it is not too early to see a groomer. In fact, it can be helpful for a younger puppy to be groomed in order to get used to being handled in this way during the prime socialization period between 8-12 weeks of age.

I would wait until Keelo has finished his full series of vaccinations (at about 16-18 weeks) so that he is protected against those infectious diseases. Be sure that he receives his kennel cough vaccination as well. This vaccine is by no means 100% protective, but it can help to reduce the severity of the symptom should he contract kennel cough.

She currently isn't fully vaccinated, so it is best to wait a bit if possible. I would recommend doing puppy wipes or waterless shampoo until then, if you are not too keen on doing a full on bath right now. This can at least get some of the puppy dirt off until she is ideal age for a grooming appt. Another alternative is to have a mobile groomer do her bath or discuss with the grooming facility to see if they take any extra precautions for puppies that aren't fully vaccinated. 7-10days after final vaccination should be ok as long as he will be kenneled individually and not mixing closely with the other dogs in to be groomed. Check with the groomers what their individual policy is

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Starting gentle grooming at a young age is a good idea to train Mimi that grooming is OK and good. I would start by just having the instruments (clippers, nail trimmers, etc) near her, and touching her, but not on and not actually trimming or clipping. With this include lots of positive praise and treats. Playing with her toes and nails with your hands on a regular basis helps as well. You can then start grooming in small unstressful bits of time.
