Is green poop normal for an orphaned puppy on milk replacer?

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 16 days old | 2 lbs

2.5 week old orphaned puppy was switched to milk replacer 4 days ago. First stool after eating formula was mustard and seeding (indicating mothers milk) his second stool came 48 hours later and was very soft and light brown. Third stool was hard, dark brown (not red brown) and lumpy. Just now, the forth stool, was soft and mostly in tact but it was dark green in some areas and light green in others. Is this due to his change in diet? Is the formula too rich? his temperature is normal. Not fussy.

It could be due to the change in diet. If he otherwise seems fine than continue with the milk replacer and monitor him. Have him examined by a vet if you have any concerns. He will need to be dewormed with a broad spectrum dewormer and vaccinated once he is old enough.

This sounds serious and I would recommend trying to see another veterinarian if possible. Once neonatal puppies start to decline for whatever reason things can progress rapidly, and often there is not much to do other than offer aggressive supportive care. I would be a little surprised if the umbilical cord incident was related, unless she has an infection that has led to sepsis. This puppy might need to be tube fed, and her blood sugar could be low.

Unfortunately a diagnosis can’t be made on stool color alone. Testing for intestinal parasite, liver disease, and issues with intestinal absorption would be warranted. Barley and cottage cheese don’t make up a completely balanced diet, and the lack of certain minerals in the diet can lead to stool color changes. Once your vet has a better idea of what may be going in internally, they can recommend a special diet or have you consult a nutritionist to formulate a balanced homemade diet.
