Why is my dog's poop green? How do I get his stool back to normal?

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 34 lbs

hello dr My dog has green stools since over a month and a half now.. Earlier he had orange and yellow stools sometimes too before the green started We are doing a fecal exam tomorrow He eats cottage cheese and barley these days What should we do to get his stools to normal? What is the diagnosis? Thanks!

Unfortunately a diagnosis can’t be made on stool color alone. Testing for intestinal parasite, liver disease, and issues with intestinal absorption would be warranted. Barley and cottage cheese don’t make up a completely balanced diet, and the lack of certain minerals in the diet can lead to stool color changes. Once your vet has a better idea of what may be going in internally, they can recommend a special diet or have you consult a nutritionist to formulate a balanced homemade diet.

A reputable breeder would not have sold you a puppy in such poor condition. It may be either or a combination of stress due to a new home and illness. Without a physical exam, it is difficult to determine. Since he is "new", he should be seen by a veterinarian anyway to confirm good health or to diagnose and treat any pre-existing conditions. Submit a stool sample to diagnose intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. Any treatment will depend on the diagnosis.

Loose stools can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Noah evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. The green color is likely dye from something your pet ingested. I recommend monitoring the stool to see if it changes back to normal color within the next day or two .Chances are it will. Also monitor Pickles a bit more closely to make sure he isn't ingesting something he shouldn't have. If he starts to have any other symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy or decreased appetite, then its best to have him seen by your local vet. Also, if there is any chance Pickles could have gotten into some kind of rat poison/bait, then he should be seen right away. My dog has dark green or brown poop. What's causing this color?

Stool color can be altered by changes in food, especially if colors are added by the manufacturer, intestinal parasites, and intestinal bleeding. Intestinal bleeding can be caused by ulcers, parasites, or conditions such as IBD. This changes the color of the stool due to products of blood digestion, which are black to dark green in color. Kidney conditions can cause gastric ulcers as certain toxic compounds build up in the body and alter acid production of the stomach. Hello, sorry to hear about Bailee. When pets are having abnormal GI signs such as vomiting, diarrhea, and a decreased appetite then we can see different changes in coloration of their stool. You should continue to monitor these changes for worsening bowel movements or diarrhea, loss of appetite and vomiting. Stool can change color based on what a dog has eaten. Button may have gotten into something in the yard or snatched some people food or had his diet changed. There are some less likely metabolic issues that can cause very green stool but in the absence of other signs I would not be too worried about this. As long as Buttons is acting normal and his stools are formed (not runny or soft) I would not worry.

Why won't my active dog eat kibble and has greenish-yellow poop?

If only Caesar could talk! This type of behavior could be related to something medical like a stomach ache or it could be behavioral. The greenish color of the stool can indicate bacterial infection as well. Unfortunately, it's impossible to know which one is the cause without a physical exam and checking the stool. I recommend to have him examined by the veterinarian who will check for abnormalities on the physical exam. They may also try a trial of medications to soothe the stomach. Since he can't talk, it's best to play it safe. Best of luck.
