My 5-week-old puppy has green and brown poop. What can I do at home?

Pet's info: Dog | Pekingese | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 8 days old | 1lb

I have an orphaned 5 week old puppy who's poop has a mixture of green and brown color with no any other symptoms present He was constipated for 2 days until yesterday when he started producing this poop and then pooped it again today. I went to the vet and he advised feed him infant cereal (i'm using Cerelac) and reduce the milk. I don't notice any change in behavior. Is there anything I can do to make his poop healthy again from home as the vet is on holiday and won't be back for another week?

At five weeks you can start transitioning to a puppy food that is moistened with some KMR or other replacer milk, or look for puppy mousse (Royal Canin and a few other companies carry it) that is designed for transition from milk to solid foods. Otherwise, keeping him eating and drinking can also help, as can testing for parasites or other illness and deworming if the stool does not return to normal.

If it ever becomes consistent diarrhea, have her evaluated by a veterinarian before her scheduled appointment. Keep in mind that it may be best to continue the formula until she is 6 weeks old. It is most likely due to the food change. Puppies can also have intestinal parasites, so it is always recommended to have a stool sample checked on Kylo. Your veterinarian can also give medication to help resolve the stool quicker and easier. They also can dispense a bland diet to help resolve it. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would consider using a different diet. Jacki may be sensitive to that diet. I would recommend you consider any of the Royal canin, Purina or Science Diet puppy foods which would be great options for her. If you ever notice her stools being black, have her evaluated by a veterinarian as sometimes that is seen with gastrointestinal bleeding. Good luck!

I would recommend bringing Dakota to a veterinarian. Typically, I would recommend boiled chicken and white rice but due to her age I would recommend having a veterinarian make sure there are no intestinal parasites and that the diarrhea is just from the stress and diet change. Why is my 5-week-old puppy vomiting and has diarrhea after new food?

It's possible the change in food could be causing digestive upset. The best way to start transitioning to solids is to make a slurry of their regular milk replacer that they've already been on combined with a little bit of the puppy food. This helps make it easier to digest without being too big of a change and may help settle their stomachs. Checking for any parasites with a fecal exam and deworming may also help, however if the vomiting or diarrhea continues, a vet checkup to rule out anything more serious is best.
