What can I give my 3-month-old puppies to eat besides dry food?

I’m expecting my new border collie’s puppies this week..they’re almost 3 months old. I nedd to know the guide line in feeding them besides the dry food for sure. Thank you zz

Congratulations on adding the puppies to your family! The main food for the puppies should be an AAFCO certified puppy food. These diets are fortified and so they contain to proper amounts of Calcium, Phosphorus, protein and other essential components for proper growth and development. I recommend to look for well known brands with good reputations like Royal Canin, Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Nutro or Purina. Here is a link about feeding puppies:

If you want to add something extra to the food (but keep in mind this is not needed and can create a dog who is a picky eater), you can add plain white or brown rice, boiled white meat chicken (white meat ONLY), canned organic pumpkin, peas, carrots, green beans, eggs whites or a few tablespoons of canned dog food.

Trusty can of course eat dry food! Sometimes if they seem uninterested you can add a little warm water to soften the food but this most likely is not needed. I would recommend sticking with a basic hard puppy food and not mixing in human foods. Giving human food to dogs is a hard habit to break the earlier you start it. I recommend you feed dry food that is made for xtra small dogs like this one from Royal Canin. Yes, you can mix some canned food into it as well. It is best to feed multiple small meals per days with these little micro/mini breeds as they tend to get low blood sugar if they go too long between meals. Small meals 3-4 times per day is best - mostly dry food and just a touch of the wet food. Do this until about 6 months of age then you can go to feeding twice per day. ( ) ( ) Please don't give grain free diets. They are not necessary and there is actually a new study out that has linked grain free diets to heart disease/failure in dogs. Hope this helps. This is true. Puppies this old cannot ingest milk so it is likely to just go straight through them and cause diarrhea. Once they are going on 9 weeks old, then you can slowly transition them to a regular puppy formula food (dry or wet). This is not a good quality food, i would recommend trying to look for a food with better ingredients meaning more quality meat and less corn. some examples include- Orijen, Acana and taste of the wild. Royal canin is also a decent option.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Browny can eat any dog food diet that is formulated for puppies/growth, and ideally for large-breed dogs. Highly recommended brands include Royal Canin, Purina, and Hills, but other well known companies such as Pedigree are also appropriate. As long as the diet is not vegan, vegetarian or grain free, any puppy dog food diet should be OK. The dog food bag should have a feeding chart on it that outlines how much food Browny should be fed with each meal, based on her weight. I hope this is helpful!
