How often should I feed my 3-month-old Maltipoo wet/dry food?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 23 days old | 2 lbs

Hello my puppy is 3 months old and is 2 pounds. She is a maltipoo. Should I be feeding her wet food along with her dry food? If I should be feeding her wet food how many times per day should I give it to her? And what brand? Also how many times per day should I give her dry food? Right now she is just eating dry food. I have attached the brand below.

I recommend you feed dry food that is made for xtra small dogs like this one from Royal Canin. Yes, you can mix some canned food into it as well. It is best to feed multiple small meals per days with these little micro/mini breeds as they tend to get low blood sugar if they go too long between meals. Small meals 3-4 times per day is best - mostly dry food and just a touch of the wet food. Do this until about 6 months of age then you can go to feeding twice per day.

Please don't give grain free diets. They are not necessary and there is actually a new study out that has linked grain free diets to heart disease/failure in dogs.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Nyla. Because of her small size, I would recommend leaving food available to her at all times. The reason being that small puppies such as her can have difficulty regulating their blood sugar levels. If the blood sugar drops too low between meals, it can make the puppy very sick. It is fine to have 4 meal times per day with the eventual goal of her eating only during these times. At this point, you may want to offer several teaspoons of canned food at this time to signify mealtime and leave the dry out all day. Free feeding may not be appropriate when she is older from a weight management standpoint. It can also make potty training more difficult. But it would be best for her as a tiny puppy. As far as her daily allotment of dry food, see what your particular brand of food recommends on the bag. Each food contains a different amount of calories per cup. I hope this information helps!

My Maltese puppy is always hungry. How much and how often to feed?

Puppies should be fed 3-4 times a day. As for the amount, feed according to the instructions on the bag of dog food. Space the daily amount out during the day. So for example, if the bag says to feed 3/4 cup of puppy food twice a day, feed him 1/2 a cup three times a day. Smaller meals are easier to digest for the puppy and energy levels don't peak and fall so much with frequent meals. I would recommend feeding your puppy a high quality puppy formulated food, such as Royal Canin or Hills Science diet. Make sure the food is formulated for puppies, as they have higher requires of calories, protein and calcium for growth, and adult dog food will not provide that.

How much food and treats should my 3-month-old Mini Poodle eat?

It good to be concerned about Mimi's diet. I like to feed based or her condition (thin or fat) and how hungry she is, not based on calories. A small poodle needs to eat four to six small meals a day to prevent hypoglycemia, low blood sugar, which is common in very small active puppies. It can result in seizures. I feed a good quality puppy food either dry or canned and feed enough at each meal that Mimi is hungry and just finishes it. If she is ravenous you are not feeding enough. As she gets older and bigger she will not be as hungry and you can reduce her to two meals a day. A treat when she pees and poops outside is good and give one when you put her into her crate. Congratulations on adding the puppies to your family! The main food for the puppies should be an AAFCO certified puppy food. These diets are fortified and so they contain to proper amounts of Calcium, Phosphorus, protein and other essential components for proper growth and development. I recommend to look for well known brands with good reputations like Royal Canin, Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Nutro or Purina.
