My puppy has a flap of tissue in her eye. Is it serious or normal?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Judging from the photos you provided, it appears as though the area you are concerned about is a flap of tissue from the conjunctiva or third eyelid that was somehow damaged. A problem like this will typically heal on its own but may stick to the cornea permanently as scar tissue. The scar tissue will not cause any harm but will just be noticeable when you look at the eye. If there is any drainage, the eye is swollen or she is squinting, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine the eye to ensure there is no trauma to the surface of the eye itself that needs to be treated. From the photo, that looks to me more like a pustule (focal little infection) than a congenital defect (something he was born with). I wonder if he may have gotten a mild injury from playing with the other pups. If it hasn't gone away by the time the pup is ready to go home with you, I would make sure the breeder has the pup evaluated by their vet prior to you picking it up, or make sure the contract includes a clause that the breeder is responsible for having the bump evaluated and addressed.

My dog has a red bump in the corner of her eye. Is it serious?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is very difficult to tell much from the photos. It doesn't look like a bump, it looks more like red skin like she scraped it or something. The eyeball itself looks fine and the eye does not appear red or irritated which is good. I suggest you just monitor this throughout the weekend and if no improvement by early next week then get her to your vet for an exam. I don't think I'd be too worried at this stage. Hope this helps. What is the white cap in my dog's eye corner that wasn't there before?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! That is the third eyelid. That is considered a normal structure of the eye. Sometimes it can become elevated and visible and normalize on its own. I would recommend that you continue to monitor Paris for now. My puppy's third eyelid tore, a piece is hanging. Does it bother her?

Unless it gets inflamed or starts irritating her eye, I would just keep watch on it. You might ask your vet to look at it the next time she is in for her annual exam and ask their opinion. It doesn't look like something worth anesthetizing her for alone, so unless she is getting another procedure at the same time, your vet may not think it's necessary to repair unless it starts to cause problems.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The pictures of Ziggy's eyes are hard to say for sure, but it appears what you are seeing is his third eyelid. It can become visible for a number of reasons, the most common of which in a dog his age include lymphoid hyperplasia (a condition that is self-limiting and rarely requires intervention), ocular foreign body which is usually irritating and makes them rub at it and squint, and a local allergic reaction to something in his environment. Keep watch on this, and if it does start bothering him, gets larger, or fails to subside within a week or two, please have him examined by a veterinarian. Hope this helps!

What causes a red, scabby eye on my dog and what should I do?

If she has been scratching more than usual and scratching at that area, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment.
