What is the white cap in my dog's eye corner that wasn't there before?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The pictures of Ziggy's eyes are hard to say for sure, but it appears what you are seeing is his third eyelid. It can become visible for a number of reasons, the most common of which in a dog his age include lymphoid hyperplasia (a condition that is self-limiting and rarely requires intervention), ocular foreign body which is usually irritating and makes them rub at it and squint, and a local allergic reaction to something in his environment. Keep watch on this, and if it does start bothering him, gets larger, or fails to subside within a week or two, please have him examined by a veterinarian. Hope this helps!

Judging from the photos you provided, it appears as though the area you are concerned about is a flap of tissue from the conjunctiva or third eyelid that was somehow damaged. A problem like this will typically heal on its own but may stick to the cornea permanently as scar tissue. The scar tissue will not cause any harm but will just be noticeable when you look at the eye. If there is any drainage, the eye is swollen or she is squinting, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine the eye to ensure there is no trauma to the surface of the eye itself that needs to be treated. Sometimes there are changes in pigmentation in that region of the eye which are not considered abnormal especially if not bothering the patient. Good luck and have a good night!

Oh my! Einston is adorable! The area I believe you are talking about is the 3rd eyelid which is in the very inside corner of each eye. It is normal for a 3rd eyelid to be white, pink or brown. And dogs that have variable fur color often have some variation in the color of their 3rd eyelids. I would be sure to have your veterinarian verify that what you are looking at is his 3rd eyelid at his next regular appointment. If you notice any redness, squinting or tearing, be sure to have Einston's eye examined by your veterinarian right away. I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would continue to monitor it for now as this may just be an area of infection or inflammation. It could even be a growth though thankfully most of the eyelid growths in dogs are benign. I would continue to monitor it for now. If it goes away then great. However, if it does not go away and actually continues to grow, I recommend you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to look into this further and see what seems more likely. Best of luck!

It's a little difficult to tell from the pictures which layer of the eye the opacity is in, but I will discus the most common reasons for an opacity in the outermost aspect of the eye (the cornea). The first possibility is that if Lily had an ulceration of her eye, that the area could have scarred in which will result in tissue that is more white. I would have expected that you would have noticed that here eye was red, or she was squinting or tearing if that were the case. The most common reason that a corneal opacity will appear without any injury to the eye is actually a benign fat or cholesterol deposit. We don't know why some dogs develop them, but they tend to develop them in the other eye over time as well. I would recommend having your veterinarian examine Lily to verify that is what they think is going on. If that is the case, then there isn't any reason for concern. If Lily's eye is red or if she is squinting or rubbing her eye, please have your vet examine her right away. I hope that was helpful and answered your question. I think you are talking about Taya’s right eye correct? That looks like it’s her 3rd eyelid which dogs and cats have but humans don’t. Many times the protruding eye lid can indicate a change in the innervation to the eye, a change in the eye pressure or sometimes a tumor in the area. I would recommend to make an appointment with the veterinarian for an exam. Make sure Kaya does not scratch or rub at the eye lid as this may cause damage and she has an important tear gland within the structure.
