Puppy dry heaving, vomiting, and diarrhea: Should I see a vet?

Poor Bailey! That is very concerning and I don't think it is something that can be treated without some veterinary care. Please call your vet and have him examined and treated asap, especially since the vomiting and diarrhea is bad and he is shaking. He may be getting dehydrated and in need of fluids. He could have a parasite or an infection and your vet can run lab-work to help determine the cause and then recommend a treatment plan. Hope he feels better soon!

I am sorry to hear that Bailey hasn’t been feeling well. Anytime I have a patient who is coughing a few days after vomiting I worry that they may have aspiration pneumonia. I would highly encourage you to have a follow up appointment with your veterinarian soon. Hopefully he does not have pneumonia, but it is a fairly common problem after vomiting events. Baily is so cute! I am concerned though that he is not eating and having such intestinal upset. I would recommend you take Baily in for an exam with your vet as soon as possible. Puppies this young can get dehydrated very quickly and become quite ill. I am worried about the possibility of intestinal parasites, eating something he shouldn't have (dietary indiscretion), or even a bacterial or viral infection (like parvovirus). Baily may need some tests to see what the underlying cause is, such as a parvo test and fecal test. He also may need some anti-nausea medication, antibiotics, or even fluid therapy if he is dehydrated. I hope he gets back on track quickly!

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. it does sound serious. Profound vomiting and diarrhea in such a young puppy can lead quickly to dehydration. If possible, please take Bailey to your local emergency service for an appointment tonight. If this is not an option, you should withhold any water or food overnight, offer him very small amount of water in the morning and take him to your regular vets as soon as they open on Saturday morning.

Poor Bailey! Withhold food for 8 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Hi. Poor Bela. Unfortunately there isn't anything we can do from home that will help Bela. If she isn't improving, I would get her in to the ER clinic right away. She will eventually become dehydrated and will most likely need hospitalization. In puppies with vomiting and diarrhea, we worry about parasites, and a viral intestinal infection called parvo. The latter can become very serious without appropriate supportive care and medications. Please contact the emergency clinic or head there as soon as you can.

Yes, i do think that Duffy needs to see the vet. Young dogs with gastrointestinal signs can have a number of problems of varying severity - anything from intestinal parasites to the very serious GI infection parvovirus to a foreign object lodged in the GI tract. She's been vomiting nearly 24 hours and by this point has likely lost considerable fluids and electrolytes, so yes, I would get her in today and get the problem diagnosed and treated appropriately.
