My dog is coughing after vomiting and diarrhea. Is it pneumonia?

I'm sorry Bailey isn't feeling well. I recommend taking her to a veterinarian tomorrow to have them listen to her. It can be viral or bacterial but if it's viral it can take up to 2 weeks to resolve. If it is bacterial she needs antibiotics. It may not be pneumonia and she may just be expelling some of the phlegm from the kennel cough. Regarding your other dog, they were already exposed. Yes, definitely take her into the vet now. Bailey is a young puppy, and while she may have swallowed some tissues, I'd also be concerned she could have parvovirus as she won't be fully vaccinated. Whenever a young puppy is having both vomiting and diarrhea, the best thing for them is to have them see a vet immediately. Best of luck.

However, other conditions unrelated to possible aspiration such as heart disease, infectious pneumonia, or heart worm infection can cause coughing as well and may just be a coincidence. This presentation associated with pneumonia is quite concerning as it could be the result of an aspiration pneumonia. He could have gotten kennel cough while he was boarded, which is not unusual in situations where dogs are kept in fairly close quarters. I recommend getting your dog in to see your vet as he may need a prescription for cough suppressant and/or antibiotics to help him recover more quickly and easily.

Coughing can be caused by many different conditions including heart disease, collapsing trachea, infectious tracheitis (kennel cough) and pneumonia (fluid in the lungs). I would be concerned about a bulldog coughing after known vomiting, as they are at a higher risk of aspirating (fluid from the stomach going down the trachea and into the lungs instead of coming out the mouth or back into the stomach). I would recommend having Valentino rechecked, and discuss x-rays with your vet to see if there are signs of aspiration pneumonia. However, if Valentino is only coughing a tiny amount, and is otherwise normal, eating/drinking, playing, running around normally, then he likely doesn't need antibiotics as some aspiration pneumonias are sterile (no bacteria present). If the coughing is continuous, or any continued vomiting, or if Valentino is lethargic, weak, not eating, and not acting himself, or has any signs of trouble breathing, then get him to a vet immediately. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The diarrhea is very common after boarding and can be related to either the food or the stress/excitement of boarding. The thirst is usually secondary (that is, to keep up with the water loss of the diarrhea.) The antibiotics Tylan and metronidazole are commonly prescribed for diarrhea because they restore the gut bacteria balance and have some anti-inflammatory effects in the gut as well. I expect that part o clear up in a few days. The cough could still be kennel cough. “Kennel cough” is a syndrome that can be caused by about a dozen viruses and bacteria. The current kennel cough vaccine only covers one bacterial cause. If it is mild, you may not need to do anything. Most dogs clear kennel cough on their own within 4 weeks. If she is not eating, is lethargic, the cough is severe or keeps her (or you) up at night, you need to see your vet for antibiotics and/or a cough suppressant. Of course coughing can also be: pneumonia, fungal infection, heart disease, bronchitis, and others. So if you are worried at all, see your vet. Best wishes to you and the pups!
