My puppy drinks water then pees immediately, is this normal?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is definitely normal for puppies to urinate more frequently than adult dogs. Every few minutes is excessive. Some puppies are just fascinated by water and drink constantly regardless of thirst. The 25 ounces is about double what Wallace needs per day, dog’s typically drink 1-2 ounces per pound. You should have him seen by a vet to rule out a UTI, kidney disease, or very rare forms of diabetes. I hope this helps and am happy to answer any other questions you have!

Oh Chester! It sounds like he is not emptying his bladder when he pees. I would take him on a leash to his potty area and give him a command like "go potty", wait 10-15 minutes for him to go. If he goes right away, great, but I would wait another 10-15 minutes to make sure he empties his bladder. Continue to take him out when he wakes up, after he eats, when hes doing playing and before bed. Keep him near you at all times so you can catch him before he has an accident. Give him lots of praise when he potties when he's told. Also set up a daily routine so he understands when to go. This is going to take time, patience, and repetition. It's normal for puppies to have very clear, dilute urine because their kidneys are still developing. They can also get urinary tract infections and other issues as well. I would recommend scheduling a vet visit (or telling them you want to talk about this issue when you schedule his next vaccine appointment) and using a small tuberware to catch his first urination of the morning to bring to that appointment. They can check to see how concentrated his urine is. Keep the urine in the fridge if it's going to be more than 30-60 minutes until your appointment. Good luck!

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I wouldn't withhold water from Chester as this could lead to dehydration in a young puppy. His drinking and urinating sound like it may be normal for a puppy his age but to be entirely sure you may want to take home to a veterinarian to have his urine checked. A puppy his age cannot hold his urine very long so I suspect he is having accidents because he physically cannot hold it that long.

I would not worry too much about having so many bowel movements, this is quite normal for a puppy. Drinking a lot may also be normal depending on his food. Measure the amount of water he drinks. If he drinks more than 100cc /24 hrs, it might be a good idea to take him to the vet for a wellness exam.

If this is a one time thing I wouldn’t be too concerned, but if Toothless is urinating more frequently throughout the day, if he is straining to urinate, or if he seems to be drinking a lot more water as well you should see your veterinarian.

No, this is concerning, especially if Charlie is dripping urine or it isn't concentrating at all (completely clear), since he's not able to hold it more than a few minutes, and should be able to hold it 15-60 minutes when not eating/drinking/playing, etc, (Some puppies will pee twice and need extra time outside after their larger potty, but shouldn't be dripping or continuing to dribble urine after). I would schedule a vet visit to rule out any issues such as a functional bladder problem, diabetes, etc that could cause this. Until you can get to the vet, tracking times he goes potty (after waking, eating, play is usually normal, just hanging out is not), and how much volume/consistency is present may help your vet figure out what is going on.
