My 9-week-old puppy pees a lot, even when relaxed. Is this normal?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I wouldn't withhold water from Chester as this could lead to dehydration in a young puppy. His drinking and urinating sound like it may be normal for a puppy his age but to be entirely sure you may want to take home to a veterinarian to have his urine checked. A puppy his age cannot hold his urine very long so I suspect he is having accidents because he physically cannot hold it that long.

Hello. Jack Jack should definitely not be urinating every 30 minutes. This could be a physical problem, or he has some kind of psychological issue, especially if he is drinking more than a normal amount of water. I think it would be a good idea to see if his kidneys are OK & that he does not have any other issues with holding his urine. At the very least, he should be able to hold his urine a minimum of 4-6 hours at this age. Hopefully, he will be fine & he will outgrow this behavior, but I would recommend making sure there is not a medical reason for such frequent outings. No, this is concerning, especially if Charlie is dripping urine or it isn't concentrating at all (completely clear), since he's not able to hold it more than a few minutes, and should be able to hold it 15-60 minutes when not eating/drinking/playing, etc, (Some puppies will pee twice and need extra time outside after their larger potty, but shouldn't be dripping or continuing to dribble urine after). I would schedule a vet visit to rule out any issues such as a functional bladder problem, diabetes, etc that could cause this. Until you can get to the vet, tracking times he goes potty (after waking, eating, play is usually normal, just hanging out is not), and how much volume/consistency is present may help your vet figure out what is going on.

Because Jack is a young puppy, he will have to pee more often because his bladder isn't very big and he hasn't developed his bladder control yet. As he grows older, he will have to pee less, but for now, I would let him out as often as he needs to go potty.

Some puppies are just fascinated by water and drink constantly regardless of thirst. The 25 ounces is about double what Wallace needs per day, dog’s typically drink 1-2 ounces per pound. You should have him seen by a vet to rule out a UTI, kidney disease, or very rare forms of diabetes. I hope this helps and am happy to answer any other questions you have!

This is REALLY normal! Most puppies are so small and there isn't much room from point A to point B so it is really common for them to drink and shortly have to pee afterwards. Try to keep a close eye on her schedule so you can take her outside shortly after you see her drinking. I hope this helps!

Hi there! It sounds like little Woody needs to visit the vet. Frequent urination can indicate a urinary tract infection (UTI). When bacteria develop in the bladder, it inflames the urethra (the tube out which a male dog urinates), and causes a dog to feel like he has to pee all the time. I would be even more suspicious of this if he has little urine coming out when he's trying to urinate. A UTI is probably not an emergency at this point, but it is likely to be very uncomfortable if this is the case. While very unlikely at this age, it is possible for the urethra to swell so much that it blocks the passage of urine, which quickly becomes a life-threatening situation. I strongly suggest bringing Woody to the vet ASAP if the frequent urination continues. In the meantime, make sure he has access to plenty of water to keep the bladder and kidneys flushed out. There isn't much that you can do for him at home safely aside from this. Do be on the lookout for blood in the urine, as this is another indicator of a UTI.
