My 3-week-old puppies have diarrhea. Is it worms or mom's medication?

I'm sorry to hear Lola's pups have diarrhea. Without knowing what antibiotics Lola is taking and why, it is possible that the antibiotics Lola is taking have caused the diarrhea in the pups. The improvement in the diarrhea is likely due to the probiotics, or beneficial bacteria, in the Greek yogurt. You may want to consider adding in a veterinary probiotic supplement that is formulated for dogs and puppies. I would also recommend consulting with your veterinarian regarding the diarrhea. Diarrhea in puppies can become very serious very quickly. There are other causes for diarrhea in puppies as well, such as parasites and viral infections, which may require further treatment from your veterinarian. Your veterinarian will likely recommend performing fecal tests to rule out some of these other potential causes.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I’d bring a collective stool sample from the puppies to the vet to check for parasites especially coccidia. You can start deworming the puppies at 2 weeks with pyrantel but that doesn’t get coccidia. Continue to weigh them daily. Their stool otherwise can be influenced by Lulu’s diet and any medications she maybe on. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best!

Imodium can safely be tried only if a bacterial and parasitic infection has been ruled out or treated for simultaneously. It is possible they are all having an adverse reaction to the dewormer you used. In which case getting them with an antibiotic and probiotic would benefit them more than just the Imodium. I would consider taking 1 puppy out of the litter to the vet to get them tested for any remaining intestinal parasites, and then the recommended treatment above should be considered. In the meantime I would recommend feeding them all a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese to help settle their stomachs. Poor pups! The most common cause of diarrhea in puppies this age is intestinal parasites, so I would recommend taking a fecal sample to your vet to be checked tomorrow morning, if you can. He/she can prescribe an appropriate dewormer or other medication if needed, depending on what is found. If the fecal exam is normal, then it would be best to bring the puppies in for an exam sooner than next Monday if possible since they may need an antibiotic or other medication to treat the diarrhea - it's best not to let this go too long, since young puppies like this can get very sick, very quickly.

Unless the amoxicillin was prescribed by your veterinarian, you should stop giving it, as it does not work against viruses. If one puppy has roundworms, then all puppies will have roundworms and should be treated with a puppy wormer available from your vet or a petshop. Any wormer which is specified as a puppy wormer should be effective. Puppy wormers are either in tablet or paste form and are given by mouth.

Your puppy may have to take a second round of wormer approximately 2 to three weeks after the first. Considering your puppy was severely infected with round worms (if you can see them= severe infection) these worms likely laid a lot of eggs which now have turned into larvae/worms and were not hit by the first round of the wormer. This should then hopefully alleviate the diarrhea.
