My puppy has diarrhea again after roundworm medication. Why?

Yes, deworming tablets can cause some diarrhea in puppies, but it could also be due to the dead worms moving through Hunter's intestines. Given that he has just recovered from diarrhea, I recommend waiting another week before giving him the next deworming tablet. It's fine to deworm him every two weeks until he is 12 weeks of age, then he should be dewormed monthly until six months of age. After that, he needs to be dewormed every three months. I bet she's a cute little thing :) We typically recommend repeating deworming treatment every 3 weeks (21 days) in young pups as the deworming medication only acts on certain life-stages of the worms living inside the dog. If Aurora has a heavy worm burden inside you can expect to see some dead/almost dead worms passing in her stool-this is normal. If Aurora continues to have diarrhea a checkup with your regular vet would be recommended. Whilst internal parasites can be a common cause of soft stool in young dogs there can be a myriad of other possible causes, including coccida, parvo virus and inappropriate diet.

However, if you are still unsure and didn't see the pill within the vomit, it is best to wait at least 3 days, give a second dose, then wait 2 weeks and give a 3rd dose just to make sure he gets the medication. It is possible that if your dog had a severe round worm problem, all the dead worms now are causing the intestine to try and get rid of them as fast as possible. This is achieved by diarrhea. I would wait for another day to see whether it goes away by itself. If not, then I suggest you withhold food for about 12 hrs and then feed some bland food (boiled rice and boneless chicken) for a day and then slowly transition back to his normal food. If that does not clear it up, it is time for a vet visit.

These signs could be compatible with a colitis, which is an inflammation of the last part of the colon possibly secondary to the parasite infection, usually related to dietary indiscretion. As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. The two most common reasons for persistent infection with roundworms are not yet clearing the infection he was born with (yes, they can be infected in uterus) or your yard is contaminated with roundworm eggs (one study showed roundworm eggs remained infective for 20 years). If it was done on his first visit, it may be repeated or additional tests recommended. Depending on his results, medication will likely be prescribed.
