My 7-week-old puppies have diarrhea. Is Imodium safe for them?

It's actually not good to give Imodium for diarrhea unless advised by a veterinarian. Diarrhea is the body's way of getting rid of toxins, or bacteria/viruses/parasites that are causing harm. All Imodium does is prevent diarrhea, but does nothing to treat the cause of the diarrhea. I would not recommend giving Imodium unless Cooper was suffering from relentless diarrhea. I do not suggest any human medications and if her diarrhea is severe you should have her examined by your Vet and a fecal test ran to rule out intestinal parasites. It easily could be the food you are feeding as she should be eating a puppy food. I would try a bland diet of boiled chicken and hamburger with rice for a few says. Common causes for diarrhea in a puppy include food intolerance or allergies, intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion, bacterial or viral infection, stress colitis, among others. Ofloxacin is an antibiotic which can help with bacterial overgrowth in the colon that can cause diarrhea. It can also be used in dogs with viral infections (such as parvo virus) to prevent secondary bacterial infections; it will not treat a virus specifically. I am not familiar with lectogen, but it may be baby formula. This can be a good short-term supplement for puppies that cannot yet tolerate food or dog mush (food mixed with water to make a mush). Puppies start eating food between 4-6 weeks of age. If Leo is not old enough to eat food, then I would recommend using a puppy milk replacer because it is more balanced than human milk replacer/formula or cow's milk. However, my concerns are that you have not mentioned treatments for intestinal parasites. I would recommend that you talk about fecal parasite screening with your vet. You may also want to discuss testing for parvo virus if it is prevalent in your area. The most important thing in puppies with diarrhea is to encourage lots of fluids, such as puppy milk replacer, water, gatorade, or pedialyte.

Poor pups! The most common cause of diarrhea in puppies this age is intestinal parasites, so I would recommend taking a fecal sample to your vet to be checked tomorrow morning, if you can. He/she can prescribe an appropriate dewormer or other medication if needed, depending on what is found. If the fecal exam is normal, then it would be best to bring the puppies in for an exam sooner than next Monday if possible since they may need an antibiotic or other medication to treat the diarrhea - it's best not to let this go too long, since young puppies like this can get very sick, very quickly.
