My puppy has diarrhea and now pees a lot. Should I be worried?

Our 10 month teacup yorkie has had diarrhea for 3 days. Vet had us start feeding her Hills I/D canned food yesterday. She vomited once last night but not since. Her stool is still runny but much less frequent today; however tonight she started urinating frequently and it's completely clear. Should we be concerned? Our vet is closed now for the weekend.

I wouldn't be too concerned about increased urination - the canned food has an increased water content and this may be the reason she is urinating more often. If you notice blood in her urine or if she seems to be straining to urinate while passing small amounts you may want to check in with your vet to make sure she doesn't have a urinary tract infection.

The straining to urinate with small drops would make me concerned there is an urinary infection which will make training harder to do. The diarrhea can be from intestinal parasites if she has not yet been treated or diet and stress. If she is eating and drinking well with no vomiting then I would not be concerned there is a major illness causing these symptoms and would say stress and diet are a higher possibility. It is best to have your vet check her urine and stool sample because antibiotics may be needed to clear the problems

I would recommend that you have Snappy examined by the vet as soon as possible. The lethargy and dark urine indicate significant dehydration. Chronic diarrhea in a puppy could be caused by intestinal parasites or food intolerance. The sudden change in behavior could just be due to dehydration or it could be an infection, such as a bacteria or virus like Parvovirus. The vet will do an examination and may recommend testing for Parvo and/or intestinal parasites.

If she is drinking a lot of water and urinating a lot this can be a sign of an underlying disease - number one would be diabetes. Did your vet do any blood testing? If not, I suggest you have that done now. The other option, if she is not spayed, is a pyometra (uterine infection). Again, bloodwork would reveal this as she would have a very high white blood cell count. Please take her back to the vet for some blood testing.

I am so sorry to hear about your puppy! With these symptoms I would recommend finding a vet in the area to examine her. I would be concerned she could have a urinary tract infection or be suffering from constipation. If you have any canned pumpkin you can give her a teaspoon or two added to her food to try to help if it is constipation, but it sounds like she needs to see the vet for an exam!

It sounds like the diarrhea is resolving, so as long as that continues I wouldn't worry about seeing your vet. You can gradually transition back to his usual diet once the stool seems mostly formed. Urinating inside can occasionally be a sign of a urinary tract infection, urinary disease, or a disease that is causing dilute urine. If Louis seems to urinate more frequently or has another accident I'd recommend having your vet examine him and check a urine sample.

Diarrhea can be the result of an intestinal infection, dietary indiscretion (eating something that upset her gastrointestinal tract), inflammation or even stress. Bloody urine is typically due to a bladder infection, bladder stones, a primary bleeding disorder or in rare cancers bladder cancer. My dog suddenly peed a lot. Is excessive urination a health concern?

I would not get too worried over two episodes. I recommend watching his water intake and urination over the next week or so. If you notice that both remain elevated he should get checked out by a veterinarian as it could be signs of early diseases like kidney issues and Cushing's disease. Also monitor him for any blood in his urine, dribbling, or straining to urinate as it could indicate an infection or even stones.

It is very possible, and I would be worried if he's now having vomiting and diarrhea, as that may indicate a partial blockage (where some but not all stool is able to properly pass). If his symptoms continue, or none of the pee pad is passing, I would schedule a vet visit immediately to check for foreign body.

My dog has diarrhea, yellow pee, and won't eat. What's wrong?

This is a quite generic but concerning sign. Differentials are many, from gastrointestinal diseases (infection/inflammations often dietary related) to any disease that can spread systemically (causing lethargy for example) like infection. Urine could be more concentrated than normal (given the inappetence and the diarrhoea causing mild dehydration). The approach must be logic, starting from offering different kind of food (a bland diet would be best- boiled chicken and rice). A check up is needed if inappetence last for more than 24hours.
