Thank you for submitting your question. Diarrhea and the bloody urine are likely due to separate causes. Diarrhea can be the result of an intestinal infection, dietary indiscretion (eating something that upset her gastrointestinal tract), inflammation or even stress. Bloody urine is typically due to a bladder infection, bladder stones, a primary bleeding disorder or in rare cancers bladder cancer. She will need to see her veterinarian for urine and fecal testing as she will likely require medication to treat her issues. I hope this information helps!

Oh dear! Extremely bloody diarrhea like this is very concerning. This is often caused by an illness called HGE (hemorrhagic gastroenteritis), but it could also be due to a bleeding disorder of some kind, a severe systemic illness like liver or kidney disease, or ingestion of something toxic. Regardless of the underlying cause, this is a medical emergency - dogs with these symptoms often become much sicker and die within hours without aggressive treatment including IV fluids, antibiotics, and medication to stop the diarrhea and/or vomiting. I would recommend taking your dog to the nearest emergency vet immediately.

I'm glad that your dog is feeling better now. I'm not quite sure what your question is, so feel free to post again if there was something specific you wanted to know. Pooping liquid blood everywhere is a very concerning sign, and I would really recommend taking him to the vet right away even if he seems to be acting better. This can be caused by a serious GI problem like HGE (hemorrhagic gastroenteritis) or pancreatitis, ingestion of something toxic, or even parvo if your dog is young and not fully vaccinated. All of these are potentially life-threatening problems that require IV fluids and aggressive supportive care, so it would be best to take your dog to a vet today to be treated.

The blood in his diarrhea could be due to irritation of the GI tract since he's had diarrhea for three days. As long as he is eating without vomiting, isn't lethargic, and is drinking water, you can wait until the morning to have him see a vet. Now if he starts vomiting, becomes lethargic, the amount of blood in his diarrhea increases, he stops eating, and/or he stops drinking, then I would take him into an ER vet. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I noticed in one of those pictures that his stool is really diarrhea and is black (which usually means a sign of bleeding). Vomiting and diarrhea can occur secondary to conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, dietary indiscretion, parasites, among other possibilities. In addition, black stools can be indicative of bleeding into the small intestine or stomach which can happen secondary to an ulcer for instance. Bloody urine can be the result of an infection, stones, tumors, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. At the very least they can start him on medications to make him feel better and check his hydration status. In the meantime, keep water available at all times to try to prevent dehydration. I am very sorry to hear about Luna! Diarrhea with blood is a concerning symptom and veterinary care is recommended in these cases. We can have a variety of causes depending on the dog's age and history including parvovirus, gastrointestinal parasites (worms/coccidia/giardia), hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, bacterial infections, dietary sensitivities and more. I would recommend making an appointment for Luna to be examined ASAP to help determine what is causing her symptoms and how best to treat her!

Why is my dog peeing blood and having seizures? Is it serious?

I'm so sorry to hear that. Bloody urine can have a number of different causes. It can be due to a problem in the urinary tract-- such as a severe urinary tract infection, bladder stones, or a bladder tumor. Those things may also cause her to urinate frequently in small amounts and/or strain to urinate (but not necessarily). It could also be a problem higher up in her urinary tract--in her ureters (tube from kidney to bladder) or in her kidneys-- again an infection, stone or tumor. The other potential cause of seeing blood in the urine is if she isn't able to form a blood clot properly. If her blood platelets or clotting factors are low or are not working correctly, bleeding can occur within the bladder (or anywhere in the body--bruising under the skin, bleeding around the gums, blood in the stool, bloody nose, blood in the eyes). We can also sometimes see the urine look bloody when its actually a different thing causing the pigment (color). For instance, if she's destroying her red blood cells and the pigment (color) from the red blood cells which is the hemoglobin is ending up in her urine. Also myoglobin (which occurs with massive muscle damage) can result in dark reddish brown urine. Some types of toxic ingestions can also result in reddish brown urine. The seizure on Sunday makes me more concerned that something very serious is going on with her. If she's unable to clot her blood properly she could have a bleed in her brain. Or the seizures may be completely unrelated to the urine. I wish I could offer you a suggestion to treat her at home, but it sounds like you need to have her seen by a veterinarian as soon as you can.

My sick dog has cough, diarrhea, and bloody urine. What's wrong?

Oh no! Pinto sounds quite sick! Unfortunately I do agree that blood work as well as a urinalysis is in order. He may also need x-rays of his chest to see what his lungs look like if he has that bad of a cough. The blood in his urine could be due to a urinary tract infection, so checking his urine is a really good idea. He also may need a fecal check to see if he has intestinal parasites causing the diarrhea. While tests, like blood work, do not make the animal feel better, they can tell us a lot as to what is going on internally and how to best treat the animal. Certainly you can do supportive care for the diarrhea, (bland diet, etc) but I would be very concerned as to how sick your dog is that he needs more aggressive treatments, especially for the cough and blood in the urine. I would talk with your vet about supportive care such as broad spectrum antibiotics and fluids if you elect to not do the blood work. This may help Pinto to start feeling better. Bare in mind that if you skip doing the tests now and elect to treat supportively, he still may need further testing down the road, especially if he is not improving. I hope this helps. Good luck!

Why is my dog having bloody diarrhea and not eating for several days?

Blood in the stool, even if it seems to "go away" and come back later, is never normal. The fact that it's accompanied by diarrhea suggests colitis, or inflammation of the colon, as opposed to some type of bleeding mass in the rectum or colon. Colitis can have a number of causes, including dietary indiscretion (eating something rotten or non-food), parasites, food allergies/food sensitivities, inflammatory bowel disease, or infection. Leah may improve with a diet change, perhaps a more digestible diet specifically for gastrointestinal problems. To assume it's a "tummy issue" could be to ignore causes that are treatable, and at this point she's not only having diarrhea but she also lost her appetite. It's been three days and she's not improving, so I recommend having her seen by her vet for labwork to include parasite testing, blood work, and urinalysis for starters. If all is normal consider a bland diet (as recommended above), and a probiotic supplement. Ultimately, she may need to have biopsies taken to diagnose the exact cause.
